tomato varieties
permalink

im getting that itch to put a seed in some dirt so im gonna get a head start on my tomatos. My plan is to have them about 18" by the time that its warm enough to put them in the greenhouse.

I just ordered a variety called Carmello. its an indeterminate variety from Kitchen Seeds. I also ordered their Super Seet 100's. Those are indeterminate cherry tomatos. Does anyone have any experience with these or have any varieties that they have success with?

I recently picked up quite a few bundles of tomato seeds, various varieties. The McKenzie Big Beef Hybrid was one series labelled start early. It said germination was in 7-14 days. I woke up on day three to find the sprouts trying to push the plastic cover off of my tray!

If this keeps up they'll be ten feet tall and growing pumpkin sized beefsteak tomatoes before the snow melts!

Totally aggravated my schedule, though.

Were are you located? For some areas it makes a difference.

I grew 4 strains last year. Stupice (Czech), Brandywine,
Oxheart, and Early Girl.

Early Girl had the best yield, finished faster and tasted great
(especially sliced and with some olive oil and fresh mozarella
and herbs).

Gonna just grow just the Early Girl this year in a 5 gallon
bucket, Hempy style. Time to start germing for me!

i grew early girl last year. i loved the tomatos but they didnt produce as much as i hoped. i had a lot of green tomatoes but they didnt want to get ripe. i think it has more to do with the soil that i have then the variety. i think an excess off nitrogen and lack of adequate phosphorus can result in fruits not ripening. im gonna work on adding Phos. this year.

I am within spitting distance of the Canada border so i have a fairly short growing season.

I think i read on a post on hear a long time ago that tomatoes are not photoperiod sensitive. does that mean that they flower as soon as they are mature enough? does anyone know if peppers are the same way?

i have a handful of pepper and tomato plants that i plan on putting in my cabinet with my MJ plants. whats it gonna to them when i switch the lights to 12/12?

this is fun. i love planting seeds.
