If I was to clone this dwarfed citrus tree.....
permalink

So heres the deal...im sitting in the back yard...smokin a blunt...zonin out thinkin bout some gardening...when i look over at the pineapple orange tree we have that has a whole shitload of new shoots comin off of it...and wondered if i could clone it...

now i know normally citrus and such trees are usually grafted onto existing rootstock, and the mother tree has. it was grafted onto dwarf rootstock...

and i also know that rooting a cutting from a tree like that is difficult and takes a while, if it even works...

but what i want to know is....if i clone it from a branch growing at the top of the bush, will it be a normal tree, or will it retain the dwarf genetics...or are the dwarf genetics only in the part below where it was grafted...? i dont know how that works...

anyone know if ill get a regular or dwarf if i root a cutting...?

thanks...

I can't say for sure, but I think it would be a dwarf plant....

The rootstock is what determines the dwarf characteristic. If you take a cutting and root it you will have a full sized Pineapple orange tree. Air layering is a better method to propagate citrus.

You can dwarf a full size citrus tree by pruning and limiting its container size.

Yey you can airlayer with coir... I like to use peat as the lower ph seems to help roots form faster.
It won't hurt to try multiple methods untill you find one that works for you...Last time i airlayered a woody type stem it took almost 5 weeks to root.... and you need to keep it moist... Shading the branch you are airlayering REALLY helps rooting and keeps the pkg from drying too fast

Yes 5-6 weeks is about normal time for air layers to take. We used to use aluminum foil double wrapped around the long fibered sphagnum moss.
