Aerogarden - got one?
permalink

A while back I was given a gift of one of those Aerogardens...by my mother, who does not know that I grow - totally ironic and hilarious. She knows I like plants and have limited space. But anyway, I haven't done a whole lot with it although I did have a couple of good crops of basil, marjoram, chives and other stuff over the winter. I decided to spark it up again with some lettuce to see what it will do.

I don't buy their seed pods, which are outrageously expensive (~$15 for seven pods). After my first harvest, I salvaged the set of seed pods that came with the garden. Today made my some inserts with my own seeds and some chunks of sponge. This is how I did the last round of herbs and they came out great. We'll see how she does with some salad greens. I need some lettuce for my window box garden anyway...

Anyone else played with one?

BTW: For those who do not know what an Aerogarden is, it's a self-contained tabletop hydro with a small (~1gal) res and a built in CFL light and timer. The CFLs are not terribly powerful, although there is a "Pro" model that has 4 CFLs and a slightly bigger res. They use "organic" nutrient pellets although they don't specify the NPK. It's pretty easy to work with, and they must include some pH buffer in the pellets because there is no need to pH the res.

The Aero in the name is a bit misleading - there are no sprayers or anything. An internal pump delivers nutrient water to the underside of the cups, more like a glorified drip system.

I actually seen these advertised here in Oz at 2am on the shopping channel and thought they would be good as a compact cloner. I'm afraid the same thing will happen when I buy a new toaster machine..use it once or twice, then goes in back of the cupboard for anthropologists to find in a few thousand years.

Definitely be interested to see how it goes with your own seeds. Good to see it works

Can you see an easy way to add an aquarium pump to the res or something?

I thought about using it as a cloner. If the cuttings were put in a bit of rockwool so they stayed moist, I don't see why it wouldn't work. If one of the lettuce pods throws up and doesn't germinate, I'll try it.

Yeah I bought my mom one of these last year for mothers day and also got my niece one that I just cloned out the tomato's from it and replacing with snap peas which she wants to grow now, also recycling the pods and just place a piece of rockwool in it and seeds.

My mom is growing herbs in hers right now.

I've seen some marijuana plants grown in them, and almost was gonna try that with my nieces before I gave it back.

My sister saw one of these at a garage sale now for $15 bucks in brand new shape almost she said, and didn't buy it.

Glad I saw this post right now too, I need to borrow my mom's covers to start these new peas for her and will be there tomorrow for mothers day. Thanks.

You think at all about ways around using their pellets??

Happy Growing in an Aerogarden

I put some lettuce in this one using chunks of a clean, unused sponge. I cut the sponge into slices that are about 3 1/2" long, 3/4" wide and 1/4" thick. I plopped a few seeds into the center of the strip and then folded it in half and stuck it into their little plastic pod. The drip fountains can decrease in volume after time, so I had to pull the sponge through the cup a little bit to make sure it was getting wet from the fountain. This is how I did the herbs before and they came out great. We'll see about the lettuce.

I think he meant the nutrient tablets. I have an aerogarden classic and have actually been using GH Gro and Micro at 1 tsp each per water change with good results. I have 4 basil plants, 2 chive pods, and thyme in mine right now. I cant use the basil fast enough and half the time I have to cut it down and throw away simply to keep it out of the lights.

O and I am using rockwool as a replacement for the sponges they come with.
