lookin good. RIght now im having a serious issue with my tomatoes and habenero peppers geting sunbleached on me. THey looked excellent when they were indoors under my MH but since theyve made the transition to the garden they havent taken to well to the 15 hours of direct pouding sun. I ended up putting cardbaord cutouts into the tops of the cages in an attempt to shade them a little bit from the extreme light they apparently werent accustomed to. Hopfully they will adjust and put on enough new growth to fight out the spring into the latter half of the season. We got 6 childrens mouths to feed here so the more i can grow on my own the better!

To expand onmy previous entry i got a question.

Is it possible to top the tomatoes and peppers?

The growth patterns are similar to MJ and im wondering if i cut the main stem if i will get branching as i would with my other garden.

Yes, topping will cause branching on the peppers and tomatoes.

Thnx buzz. Thats kinda what i was hoping for.

I figured if its possible it may aid me in pushing some new growth out past the stuff that got a little sunbleached when i first put them into the beds outside.

I figured I'd post my issue here....
permalink

Hello everyone, I just planted my first outdoor veggie garden about 2 weeks back with some plant starts from the local home place.

Everything has been going really well, with extreme growth. But I noticed about 5 days ago, that my two Kentucky Wonder Green Bean plants and my Cucumber are being attacked by these black bugs with wings. At first glance, they appear to be gnats.

I've been doing research on common pests, and I'm thinking they may be 'aphids'? I purchased some organic pesticide spray, and doused them twice so far. Which seems to stop them for the day, but they are back in a days time. It is not as bad as some pictures I've seen, yet I could see it getting worse. Them plants have been doing so well, and don't deserve the torture! They are all in the same rectangular planter, and I'm going to quarantine them, and transplant them into individual pots tomorrow, for further observation.

Does anyone have any great suggestions, proven home remmedies, etc, to combat and conquer these lil bastards for good? Thanks for the help. I'll try to get pics up of my entire garden soon.

Holy Shit that's a lot of plants. Most are in the outdoor garden; 1 tomato and the cucumber are in a Topsy Turvy; citronella is on my deck.

I also have 2 yellow delicious apple trees, though I don't expect them to produce much this year, and 2 pear trees that I also don't expect much from this year.

Oh and 3 girls ready to harvest in 4 or 5 days.

Topsy Turvy you say? Like the infomercials? How well do they work? I saw some at the HD today.

alrighty, so ive got some pics of a few things in the yard....things are going great so far...way less bugs than last year at this time, but we took some precautionary steps by planting deterrants and using natural pest repellants.

first off we got a Richmond Green Apple cucumber. I ate a done one of these today and it was friggin delicious...they get to about the size of a medium granny smith apple and taste wonderful...perfect for a salad or just eating like an apple!

next is a blurry shot of mr bumblebee doin work on my eggplant. every mornin when i come out to check on things and just stare at the garden there are a few of these guys out pollinating. oddly enough i enjoy the soothing buzz they make when flying around...hehe

here is a Marketmore 76 cucumber thats almost done. Havnt eaten one of these yet but i gifted one to a friends dad and he has eaten two or three and says theyre the best hes ever eaten.

here is one bed of many out back. in here is three diff cukes and a mini muskmelon in the back row, and two dif eggplants and yellow stuffing peppers in the front row. ive got my strawberry cough, blueberry, and skunk no 11 moms in there too along with a small afghan clone. ive planted the skunk out in a spot and the others will be joining them soon. they blend in perfect with the veggies.

here is a shot of the bed in front of that. in here i have a few diff eggplants in the far row, and a few peppers in the near one. you can also see all the banana plants im getting ready to split up repot and sell. in the earthbox to the left in the corner of the bed ive got about 10 auto ak47 seeds i just put in, and in another one in a diff bed ive got about 10 lowryder #1's.

here is a Kumari Sri Lanka eggplant. i gotta check but i think this one may be close, im not sure off the top how big they get.

and here is a Minnesota Midget with a few fruits comin off it. these dont get much bigger, but ive pulled two now a lil too early and they have a nasty taste...i think i pulled em way too early, they are supposed to be a "classic muskmelon" just mini'd..

theres a bunch more....but i couldnt fit all those pics into one post ....ive been walking around the yard grabbin fresh strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes, cukes, eggplants, carrots and radishes, and more...its awesome...

hope everyone is enjoying their gardens so far...have fun..

Looking good with all the veggies. Overplanted the squash bed. Next time I will plant half as many. Some corn and two pepper plants got destroed by a ground burrowing rodent that tore thru my veggie patch recently. Everything else is going strong.
