When in doubt try it out!! My wife and I go on walks all the time and take cuttings from plants we encounter all the time and get them to root almost all the time and we have only used rooting hormones once! Well we do use B1 vitimins...not sure if that counts.

If you are only dealing with cuttings then if you mess up you can usually just go get another one!
