Not sure where this topic belongs(Admins feel free to move it)but I was wondering about this very interesting plant. Has anyone tried growing one? How long does it take to mature? Are there different phases like veg/bloom? Could you grow one hydroponically?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Before I became a responsible and able 420 grower I looked into grow'n these for fun. I dont recall all the specifics, but basicly a fly trap is diffrent than other plants. ...I mean yea each plant is different, but this gets fed from caught food as well as waterings. I bet there are many ways to grow a flytrap. Just like there are many ways to grow pot. Maybe some google or wiki search would work better for more specific are for this plant.

![]() | I have one... Personally I think it's easy to grow... The plant produces many heads and each head eats about 3 or 4 things before it turn black and dies. It continually replaces the head after on dies and they get bigger and bigger. When the head is dying I cut it off and dispose of it in the garbage. I feed mine insects I cetch outside... but you can also buy flies for frogs and stuff at pet expo or any other pet store. You can then freeze the flies and they will go into hybernation until the unfrozen and ready to use. A few things that I've noticed that is helpful for keeping it healthy is not feeding a head to big of an insect because then it cant close fully and then the acids leak out of the mouth and onto the head and kills it... Also keep your plant very wet, moist and humid... Venus fly traps naturally grow in the wild in the swamps in the Carolinas. So a good thing to do is set the plant in a fish bowl and keep a top with small holes on top which makes the inside very humid and it loves it. The top is also useful for keeping insect from flying or jumping out. You don't have to worry about over feeding the plants because if the head is open and not hungry then it just wont close. All in all they are very fascinating plants... I would recommend them for anyone and everyone if your able to keep in humid and full. You can get them at Walmart, Pet stores, and even some local plant stores. I hope I could help with this post...

![]() ![]() | I actually had one of these, I would put flies into it to eat, but it seemed once it had something to eat like a fly or insect and closed the head would begin to die ![]() I am pretty sure they thrive when they do not eat insects and once they have caught something their life and need to live has expired *shrugs* It kind of makes sense if the only purpose for the head to live would be until it catches an insect, closes, and begins the process of digestion. It almost seemed as if the name venus fly trap is a joke taking on the opposite meaning, the plant will thrive until it catches a fly ... lol

![]() | Venus fly traps can go through a lot... but they certainely do not thrive when they don't eat... or else they wouldn't eat insects. All heads from the plants naturally die and are replaced with new one... It's just the cycle they go through. They can survive for a very very long time without insects though, if it's in a humid environment... What happened with yours was you were feeding it either to big of an insect to where the trap couldn't close and it leaked out the acid which killed itself or it just naturally died after the 3rd or 4th insect which it will then replace with a new head from the energy it gained from the last head that ate insects... Another cool thing is when the plant grows large enough with more than,... I believe 8 heads than you can split the extra heads off at the rhizome, the base at which all head converge at, and grow a completely seperate plant... The plants are quite interesting and if anyone has anymore questions I would be more than happy to help...
