Tomatos and light schedule?
permalink

I bought a tomato plant today and wondered how many hours of light does it need to start flowering, fruit forming? Does 12/12 work? Im gunna pick the first set of flowers off for better fruit later.

Being grown indoor with a hydro setup.

Tomatoes are neutral in their photoperiodicity. They will flower under conditions with a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight daily.

hi art0_saar1.
here is some info taken straight from "the gardener's bible" by Ed Smith, it applies to Transplanting Tomato Plants. i hope it can be of some help to you in getting your tomato plant going strong. good luck & have fun!

"crucial variables are soil temp and night air temp. Soil temp should be at least 55-60F (13-16C) and night air should Not go Below 45F (7C) unless the plants are protected.
Set supported plants 15 inches (37.5 cm) apart in a single row. If you aren't using any kind of supports, allow 2 feet (60cm) for determinate varieties and 3 feet (90cm) for indeterminate. Determinate varieties are sensitive to transplant shock, so be careful not to disturb their roots.
Tomatoes are native to South America, where they get longer and warmer growing seasons than they get in most of the US. Growing good tomato crops consistently involves setting out well-started plants and then using some tricks to convince them that the growing season is longer and warmer than it really is."

a small bit of info on fertilizing tomatoes
"Water newly planted plants with a dilute solution of fish emulsion or compost tea. Because tomatoes can grow quite large, they need plenty of nutrients; plan on supplemental feedings every two or three weeks with compost tea, fish emulsion, or another natural fertilizer."

yes yes, good point there....another good thing to remember (if you happen to start them from seed that is) is to repot them several times...each time cutting off all the leaves except for the top 1-2 inches and then bury all of that stem. better root system and they won't get so freaking tall before it's time to put em in the garden!

I was wondering this today actually, and hoped on the site to do some research.

My thoughts were ... Will fruit/veggie plants not flower untill they get darkness, much like Mary?

If you put some tomatoes or peppers or something under 24hours of light, will theyh stay in their veg mode untill you switch over to 12-12 or 18-6? Or will the just start forming flower sites under 24 hours of light. Im curious becasue I am going to get some veggies and stuff going soon.
