Been groing a tomato plant indoors using a wick system to deliver nutrients. I know nothing about hydro, just learning by doing. Let me expllain the setup. Plant is in 2 gal pot. (Man now that I'm writting this it sounds really amateur) wick goes through a hole in the bottom of the pot and into a res. with miracle grow being slowly added working up to larger doses. Wick reaches up to bottom of peat pot where it was rooted.

This plant was germinated using the paper towel technique you will find on this site. It was then planted in a peat pot and allowed to root. Unfortunately it was ripped out at ground level by one of my kids. I took the plant and put it in water and daily bubbled air using a dropper. Weekly changed the water. Once roots had started poking through peat I planted it in the above system.

Remember I just did this for fun. A, "what if?". Its interesting so far. Soil seems a little wet (ripples in the leaves, white spots on lower leaves). Got fungus gnats, but I put about 1/2 inch of sand on the top and the problem has gone away. The results so far in 12 days plant grew a total of 15 additional inches. It is now at 17".

I snapped a branch while trying to train it. Wow a lot more sensitive than what I'm used to. Within minutes the leaves had wilted. However I proped up the branch and after two days all was well. I didn't even loose a leaf.

I should mention, plants are being grown next to a window. Natural light only. Was wondering if I could top a tomato plant. To be honest, I'm not really sure what the apical bud looks like. Well if you have read this far and stayed interested drop me some thoughts. Totally new to the whole gardening thing, but I do have some knowledge from reading.

ooooh no dont get me started on tomatoes! i love growin those buggers.

argo, (ofcourse ) is right, but also know that "suckers" start to form from each node, and these are just like another whole plant growin out the side of your plant, and it sucks a lot of energy from the main stem if you leave to many.

you can let them grow and then start fudgin around with cloning. last year i knew nothing about growing tomatoes, and didnt have the sense to keep up with the daily waterings, and still got great results, even though i didnt remove the suckers; although, i know those results could have been a whole lot better!

anyway sorry for ramblin on ya. my mom suggested to me to top my tomatoes last year, but never did, they got so freakin legggy, and when i finally cut them, about 8 or 9 months agter i planted them, they stood a nice thin, and lanky 7 feet.

we need a tomato grow journal thread!

Thanks guys. Just to let you know this is my "other grow". My main one seems to be doing well also. Cheese, I've heard about these "suckers". didn't know what they were before yesterday. I'll keep a lookout. I've heard that they make excellent clones though. What do you think about my wick system? It's in soil, so I don't know how it will work. Will my roots eventually follow the wick down to the nutrient solution? Will I need a bigger pot?

The suckers are the branches forming in-between the nodes.
