![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Tobacco farming and controls in the United States........>http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/cancer/r...1_997_2000.pdf Actually, you can grow your own tobacco. The USDA used to set quotas upon the tobacco farmer which limited basically how much a farmer could grow and thus sell. This in turn sets the price as it affects supply directly. The quotas each year were based on the previous years sales of US tobacco companies. As you can imagine, the lobbyist working for the tobacco companies prior to about 2005 were VERY well paid and funded. In 2003 or 2005, the quota system was changed a bit, although it basically still exists since the primary US companies purchase only from select farms and will only buy so much as per each company's policy. This "policy" changes every year and they just use their numbers...basically the same as before just now the companies have total control. The main reason for this change is that tobacco production in certain countries is being sponsored by US companies and they use US technology. These countries can produce the same quality of tobacco for far less cost; thus many of your generic smokes come from this route. It was crushing the small tobacco farms, especially in Kentucky and Tennesse. The larger farms, most of which are in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia were not being affected as hard but they too felt the sting. It still amazes me since basically they "appear" to be producing less tobacco but in reality it is simply outsourcing and the supply has not changed. Economics is a f'd up thing........ I was literally born and raised on a farm. Our family grew tobacco for many years and I recall those quota rates vividly as my grand-dad would always fuss and cuss..... I add that we stopped growing tobacco in 1994 as "the writing was on the wall"....as he would say. He was right........Quest ![]()
