OK Team, I've learned a TON of gardening skills here. ------------------- COMMERCIAL BREAK ------------------- I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you all for not only teaching me these oh-so-taboo skills we share, but also for making this hobby more and more interesting every day. And what's more is you've all sparked my interest enough that I'm going to be taking on a new task. Thank you GC. ---------------- Back to the post ---------------- Thanks for sticking with me. I've decided to begin my journey for the perfect fig. I've actually already found it. Travelling to the Middle Eastern country of my origins, I came across 'The Fig' for the first time. I was much younger then, but I never forgot about my first fig. My family comes from a very small village that is a cornucopia of fig trees. And when I sunk my teeth into the first of many following figs, it was like taking a bite of heaven, literally. Picked right from the tree, nothing is better than a fig. When I got back from that trip, I started looking for figs at home. Let me fast-forward a bit. Figs here suck, they are dried. What's up with that? All shriveled and dry. Nasty. ![]() Now that I got 'mad skillz homey', I've decided to try to cultivate a fig tree at home. What basically prompted this is that my dad is over there now and will be bringing back some seeds from the figs there. I now want to apply what I've learned to this wonderful fruit. I don't know anything about fig cultivation. I did a bunch of research on Google, but before I dig too deep, I'd like to request advice from the main source of my cultivation experience. It seems that the fig tree loves to be pruned and trained, and also that it may be better to obtain a cutting rather than seeds. I don't know, that's why I'm asking. I have tons of questions, so if anyone cares to throw some good info my way, I can save you all from a six page post of questions. Please don't suggest getting a cutting(unless you have to ) as this will break my heart. I'd love to have a cutting from a tree over there, but it's obviously not possible as it would be confiscated at Customs. So seeds it will be...unless anyone can suggest a great 'strain' of fig cutting that I can obtain here in the U.S. Are there even such things a fig 'strains'? Another one of the many questions.AAAAAAAND, anyone that helps is more than welcome to stop by and eat as many figs as you can stuff in your face. I know I will be. After you get done shoveling figs down your throat, you can report your experience here. Seriously, I am quite interested in succeeding at this task, so bring your fig skills along for the ride. I'll even journal this if anyone would like.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | There are several varieties of figs that will grow here in the US. Brown turkey and Celeste are the two most widely available. They are very easy to start from cuttings. I have a huge brown turkey fig that tries to eat my shed every couple of years. I whacked it back quite severely this winter and it is flushing out with a new canopy now. Figs can be grown from seed. Here is a pretty good article with a few tips on sprouting fig seeds. ![]() | ||
