wheatgrass juice
permalink

hi everyone, thought i would quickly share my wheatgrass setup for anyone who is keen and a health nut like me

lets face it, smoking weed aint good for the respiratory system and raises carcinogens in our blood and wheatgrass is well known for reducing carcinogens aswell as a host of other benefits that can be found by doin a little goog'lin.

need:
- wheat berries
- paper towel
- seedling tray
- humidity dome
- organic ferts and soil
- sieve/colander

get 200grms of organic wheat berries from your local health food store and throw them into the sieve and give them a rinse off.

then put them onto a plastic plate or whatever and soak them in some water (i add a little seaweed tonic). let them soak for twelve hours then rinse again, put them back onto the plate and repeat this process every 8-12 hours (mould will quickly form if you dont keep things fresh) until you start seeing the berries germinate 36-48hrs. keep in a dark area and temps at around 17-22c

after germination get a seedling tray (12"x9") and put in a layer of soil about 1" thick and evenly spread out the berries, dont worry if they end up lying on top of eachother...not a problem. give them a good misting (i use some fishfert at this stage) and cover with some paper towel and then dampen the paper towel, dont saturate. throw on a humidity dome and keep them warm/temperate again in a dark place.

over the next few days keep the paper towel damp and let more fresh air in, reducing humidity. after 3-4 days the sprouts will be pushingup the paper tower an inch or two, water everyday with fresh water. (pic below is after 24hrs)

after this just put them somewhere warm again and give them plenty of light but keep it indirect, wheatgrass does not like direct sunlight...a window sill is perfect.

in the next 5-7 days the grass should reach between 6"-8" tall and rich green, full of lovely relaxing chlorophyll and ready for harvest.

get yourself a cold press juicer (mine is a cheap hand juicer, cost $60). dont use a electric bladed juicer because the heat generated oxidises the juice and makes it worthless. or you can chew it like a cow until a cud develops...or until you start to feel suspect

biggest problem is mould, keep the humidity down after removing paper towel and plenty of fresh air. dont worry if you get a bit of mould towards the base of the sprouts, just cut above and rinse well. first time few times you drink wheatgrass juice you will feel like vomiting probably, dont worry it passes soon...its just the juice attacking the bacteria and crap in your tummy, this is a good sign! the chlorophyll gives a nice relaxing sensation also.

well thats it, iv probably missed something out but questions welcome.

How long can you expect the grass to stay fresh? When it reaches maturity should you just hack it all down and make a batch of juice with it or leave it entact and cut it down and juice it when you want it? I'm accustomed to doing a "shot" of wheatgrass. Is this because it would be like $30 for a decent (8 or 12 oz) serving or is there some other reason why health food stores only serve it in 1oz or 2oz shots? I dig wheatgrass (I don't find it nasty at all like most people, but kind of sweet) though it does taste kind of "grassy". But it is damn expensive to get one shot at a time.

hi hidetora and welcome to GC!

after it is ready to harvest you can cut it and put it in a container in the fridge and it will stay good for a day or two. but once it has been juiced you should take it within 15 minutes before it oxidises (eg, the way an apple quickly turns brown after a bite)

just take what you need as you juice it, that tray of wheatgrass above will make roughly 4-5 oz of juice.

the reason why shots come in 1oz at juice bars is because that is regarded as a good starting dosage. once you become accustomed to it you can up your dosage to about 2-4oz but i would never drink more than that. wheatgrass is PACKED with vitamins and the excess will just get passed by your body...waste

and i would agree about the taste...sweet and grassy

wow. my old guide got bumped

you can let it grow a second time but it will be significantly lower in nutrients. better to just grow a fresh tray every time.

yeah i have seen the powdered stuff in shops but i havnt tried it. considering wheatgrass is a 'living' juice and should be taken within 15 minutes before oxidation sets in, i would say it is not as good as the fresh stuff.
