I thought everyone here has always said that ip addresses cannot be traced from this site. Well what if for some god awful reason someone got the server and traced everyone...I'm not trying to cause any gruff, just a question about my security as well as others

The server does not LOG IP addresses. Meaning it does not store the IP #'s on the HD. Banning an IP is different.

ok, well i would just like to know how it would work. If it does not log an ip then you would need an ip sniffer, or just sit here and wait for someone to log on, try to catch their ip real quick...this still makes no sense

I knew I shouldn't have said that. Leave it to GF to freak out. Anyone who spends time on the internet should know whatever they do can be traced at all times. For some reason people think that they are anonymous on the internet, but they are not. Every web site you visit has (and most log) your ip address. Computers cannot communicate to each other with out giving up the ip address. As for this site we do not LOG Ip addresses which is to say we do not keep track of what IP posted what. There is no way to tie anyone to any single post on this site via IP address.

GF you outta be more worried about your ISP server logs that track (and log) every web site you go to and what page you even visited, and some even how long you were there. Now of course, most logs are not looked at unless they have a reason to.. Like a warrant or reports of hacking, stuff like that. But none-the-less they do leave a trail that can be easily followed.

If you’re seriously worried about internet security you should be coming to this site (or any site) through a proxy server. Proxy servers come to the site (or any site) for you with there IP address so all the ISP sees is that you are going to a proxy. But most are much slower then if you came here yourself.

There are a few anon proxy servers out there but most are pay for service sites. Here are a few places I know of and sometimes use. Also do a google search for ‘anonymous proxy’ and you’ll have more then you need.

I was a network tech, and tech support for an ISP.. you were for the most part correct.. but there is a couple of fllaws in your theory..

For the most part.. aside from DNS queries on a DNS server.. the ISP seldom has any idea of where most of their traffic is going. Unless they were EXTREMELY small and bored tech's were curious.

The DNS records are about the best and most efficient way of seeing where people are going.. because they will have a record of what ip address requested a certain domain to be resolved.

Proxy servers ARE the best and most efficient way to log communications, and posts, to a site like this.. I would HIGHLY recommend that if an individual is worried about someone checking out what and where they are going.. do NOT use a proxy server.

I don't think I trust any of the "anonymizers" on the internet. I think they are mostly snake-oil salesmen that are just trying to create a revenue stream. Most of them likely sell information they recieve to a 3rd party.. we may NOT want to know who!!!!

I run my own DNS server.. it's quite easy with the technology today.. so all my ISP sees is my ip address sending data to another ip address.. they have little to NO reason to try and figure out where I am going.. Unless they are instructed to monitor me for legal purposes.

So, since I do not use a proxy server, outside DNS source, and I am using the secure server so the data is encrypted, I feel PRETTY safe. LEO would have to have a specific reason to monitor my activities, and would find much trouble in verifying the data.

Without getting too complicated.. DNS servers change the www.whatever.whatever.. into a usable IP address, much like a phone # to the server..
Then you computer can connect to the server.. it is all done by #'s on the net.. not names.. so this is the conversion process from name->numbers.

and the whole banning people thing is a little outta hand....that's all i'll say cause 1. I have no control over it and 2. i have been banned myself and don't wanna go down that road again

This thread you started with a pulled quote and after 2 years and how many posts that have been on security, IPs, logs, etc etc etc you come back asking the same thing. Sounds like you are to me. St0ney explained it more that I woud have.

There is one simple way for all you or anyone to "know" everything about how the site actually works..... Buy your own version vb and install it or hang out in the vb community.

So you are saying that you have a problem with mods and admins? Of course you dont have any control over it, you are not on staff here

I never claimed to be a network tech So thanks for setting me straight on that. I’m just a pot-head that spends too much time on the internet.

But my point was that you’re never anonymous on the internet. If LEO wants to see where you’ve been he can do it. That’s really where I was going with that.

GF.. Did you not see the after that statement? I was being funny incase you missed it. but come on, you are kind of blowing this way out of proportion. Not that I’m surprised by that any more.

Really? Even though 95% of the people on this site have never had any problems with bannings. People get banned because they continue to break the rules after being told to stop. It’s that simple. If you don’t like the way we handle things then find another place. I don’t mean to be an ass but I’m SO sick of people griping and complaining about how we administrate this site. It seems there is a small group of you that every chance they get to complain you do. we keep a tight leash on all of you because we like this site the way it is. Free of trolls and flamers that most boards have let run rampant. Now to me, I see no problem following the rules and I’ve even broke 1 or 2 myself and had to apologies to the community for it because even an assistant administrator has to follow the same rules as everyone else. People get banned because they continually break the rules and are a constant pain in the ass for the mods and admins.

And why should you have any control over who gets banned? What, should we ask your permission before we ban someone? Give me a break!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…If you don’t like the way we run things over here.. Then don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

And, now this thread is off topic and the original question has been answered as much as we are going to. If you want to learn more about how the security of this site works then I suggest you buy your own version vb because we are not going to get into it any more here.
