***GENERAL APPEAL TO ADMINS/MODS***

Please clarify the posting guidelines on commercial links!

According to Brindie's guidelines, commercial links are OK as long as they are cultivation related (and not obviously spam). From Lilbuddie's guidelines, no commercial links are allowed in signature lines (understandable). This still leaves a lot of grey area!

I am hoping that someone can clarify the posting guidelines on commercial threads, because I'm seeing quality, useful threads that mention specific businesses get shut down even though they are not in violation of the two paraphrased guides mentioned above. I can understand the need to control spam, but sometimes it seems to go too far.

Personally, i want to know about businesses are out there that cater to my needs, provide quality products, and competitive prices. If they fit these criteria, they should get my businesses (that's called a referral) and I want to know about them. I think we all know spam when we see it and can shut it down pretty quickly. Perhaps a new forum is needed to discuss commercial sources in a non-spam way?

Please don't protect me from what I want (at least in this instance)

Basically, if you are asking about a particular product: "hey, look at this light. You think it would be good?", it's ok.
If you are saying "abc company is the greatest thing since sliced bread", it's still ok to have the url there, just don't make it live.

If you are going to list every freaking hydroponic store in North America...That's what google is for.

I have never seen a thread shut down because of commercial links being posted. Most of the time as long as there is no Http:// then it is ok to mention a website and the direct link is removed by a Mod/Admin. Am I wrong on this one?? If so I stand corrected.

no you're right and alot of times the mods just edit the post and issue a warning if the member is new and hasnt read the guidelines

Ok - I think I'm getting it. I just wanted this on paper (so to speak) for the record. I think it was ambiguous, and I'm not alone. I see people in many forums dancing around the issue, including offering to give commercial info via PM instead of posting it, which helps nobody else but that one person who asked the question.

that is up to them ...just dont make it a direct link is all.... leave out the http:\\www. part and it is fine ...that is not much to ask at all

OK - that's fine. I can be consistant that way, but I hope that we all can be as well. I can remember my one and only post that got a thread shut down was the mention of a specific hydro shop in Hawaii after someone had specifically asked for it. Seemed like a harsh and somewhat subjective interpretation of the rules (not complaining!).

I really enjoy this community and the info and experience gathered here. I just hope I haven't stepped on some toes here because my rep has gone way down since I brought this up. I feel like I put in a good deal of effort to research stuff and make intelligent, thoughtful posts. Bummer that a bunch of folks don't agree........

If it's a dot.com and they are selling something, just type the site name in your post. Any of us stoners are capable of cutting and pasting that name in the browser address bar. Even us old computer illiterate stoners. If it's a live commercial link I just break them.
