I have a suggestion. I think everyone should have to check a box when they join HC that says "I have read the Grow Guide at least once" I keep seeing so many questions from newbees that are covered in the bible. I was a newbee asking the same questions, and wondered why people got so mad at me for asking questions that are answered in the guide, but now I know, and that is why I am making the suggestion. Food for thought........ Scottso

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Not to rain on your parade.. but I don't believe that it would change anything. ![]() Ever seen anyone actually read an entire EULA (End User Licensing Agreement) when installing software on a computer? I know I haven't. Bottom line.. most would just scroll to the bottom.. check the box and carry on with asking questions. You're dealing with common human behaviour.. people like to get quick answers to their questions.. and would rather not read through material that they feel is irrelevant to their immediate question(s). Should people read it.. yes.. it will answer many common and general questions.. and then if they don't understand something.. or it's not covered.. they can ask for further clarification. Unfortunately.. neither you or I will change human behaviour. ![]() PFR

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I think it would be real nice if the grow guide was updated and had lots of pictures. It leaves a lot to be desired when you are starting from scratch. I've been working on doing better pictures and better descriptions in my grow journal. Maybe anyone who is interested could work together to compile an updated illustrated grow guide. I think it would be a fun project.

Thousands of programs installed and never a one!One idea I posted a while back was the first 5 posts, they hit NEW THREAD they're linked to the GG, Humans do as they wish. It'd be nice to get them to read the GG though. Last edited by Fillabong; 09-09-2005 at 03:54 PM..

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | 1. Most people in our culture have a desperate need to be heard and recognized. Even if the questions are obvious or the statements infantile, they want to be heard. Rather than a disclaimer on the grow guide we should put a mild electric shock on the "Post Reply" button for people with less than 50 posts - only post if you REALLY need an answer j/k2. Our culture is one of instant gratification. Why spend 20 minutes rifling through threads and stuff when you can post and be nearly guaranteed that someone looking to ratchet up their post count will jump right in and answer it for them. This is especially true among our younger users. And in a way, the post count system encourages a lot of useless fluff conversation. 3. Mods could shut down threads that are duplicitous, but it would take a lot of effort on the their part to be sure the thread has been asked and answered, and they would come off as jerks who are trigger happy on the "Close Thread" button. Unfortunately, i think it's a necessary evil to keep a free and open forum that encourages new users to post. The community is more than happy to answer, and perhaps on the other side of the coin it gives members a chance to answer questions, mentor newbies and learn a bit themselves. I know with some threads I read it sets my mind thinking and off to Advanced Search or Google to answer the question for myself. Not all bad, I'd say. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I like that shock Idea, GH!!!! It's not that I hate answering questions by newbies, as we have all been there at some point, but it just gets annoying to see the same questions dozens of times. PFR, I think you are right, as I have never read a user agreement, either, but a check box may stimulate people to read the guide. Some newbies don't even know it exists and ask for example "can I flower my 2 week old plant." Something like a check box would let everyone at least know the guide is there should they choose to read it. Also, if it becomes apparent they have not even glanced at the guide, regardless whether people have suggested it or not, we can sick penguin on 'em!!!! LOL!!! Scottso

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi Scottso I may have misunderstood your suggestion but do you want people who sign up to read the grow guide or not ask "obvious" questions? 'Cause in my opinion the two aren't related... ![]() It may be just me, but when I first started my first grow, and was having problems, I could read about my exact problem in a book I bought, I saw the same exact problem on a website, it was there, in front of me, in full colour, "DF, This is your problem!!" BUT, heck, I'd never grown anything before except a beer belly, how could I be sure??, I could kill these plants that I'd saved my few spare pounds to buy, panic set in!! So, I found HC.com, found the Nursery, followed the posting guidelines (posting my VERY obvious question about seedlings stretching ) and several people dived in to help me.... I relaxed... I made friends... All was well.... My point is that even if the answer is SHOUTING at me from the grow bible or from a search, I still like, want and feel comforted by the opinions of others backing up what I see. I still ask basic questions virtually everytime I post. This does not mean I'm lazy, nor does it mean I'm after "instant gratification" and I certainly don't have a "desperate need to be heard and recognized". This is a forum, not a locked pdf document, and we are all better growers for it. Does this mean I'm the "necessary evil"? If so, great! And by the way, I've read the grow guide several times... and the advanced one... I'm on grow 4 and I still consider myself very much a newbie... DF ![]()
