So I’ve got this new dual xeon BSD box all setup and tuned for mySQL data delivery. There were a few rough spots along the way, but with some configuration changes we’ve seen no database issues for a few of our busiest hours now. That’s a good thing.

What’s this got to do with HC? Well, my intention was to move HC.Com off of the slow ass server that it’s on now and move it over to our new dual xeon servers. You see, I have Linux running the web front side and now we’ve got BSD running the data backside of the show. Given that the BSD box is a dedicated mySQL server I was able to tweak the configuration to use much more of the systems resources and that seemed to fix the early problems we were having.

HC.Com was going to be BLAZING fast compared to what it is now when it got to the new servers, I thought. Once I started looking at the amount of data transfer I had to accomplish while the site was down it quickly became apparent that this was NOT going to work..

If old server->new server is less than 100K/sec throughput, isn't the MySQL connection crap? Or is the new box not live at all now? I don't really understand how the connect could be so slow though...are the servers in different datacenters or something? Does the old box have a 10Mbit NIC?

Ya, 3 servers total. Two at one data center with FAST connection, and one (hc) at second data center with T-1 access/shared - that's why we need to move.

Good questions, bro ~ welcome to HC.Com
