Non-palmate leaves?
permalink

Hey all, question for you(s)...

I have what I believe to be a non-palmate plant. Just single opposing leaves the whole way up (until they begin to alternate). I am utterly baffled. It was (I thought) bagseed. On reflection I suppose its entirely possible it was just growing where I thought bagseed had been growing and is actually something else entirely.

The case:

This plant sprouted exactly like every other plant I've seen. Two cotyledons, followed by two, single opposing leaves. The thing is, as the plant grew, its leaves never became palmate... they're just singles the whole way.

At vegetative maturity main top began producing a second, smaller leaf near the base of the main leaf (not unlike the smallest leaves near the stem of a palmate leaf). This second smaller leaf, then did the same thing, leading to a pattern that looks kind of like this (emanating from both sides of the main stem):

I
I___I
_I_____

Where the bottom line represents the single leaf coming out of the stem, and the verticle line represent the second, smaller leaf, and the top horizontal line is the second smaller leaf's small leaf.
It continues out from the stem in that same pattern like how the mortar between bricks in a brickwall looks.

The other thing is these single leaves look EXACTLY like the individual fingers of a palmate leaf... right down to the veins, serration, and general size (although I know leaf size is quite variable).

Does anybody have any experience with a similar plant??? I am absolutely baffled.

Thanks!

-Grendel

I have seen it on re-veg but never seen it on the whole plant before. That's wild. Please post some pics! I always like something different, I would like to follow the plant's progress. Maybe start a grow journal?? Welcome to the garden by the way!

I too, think it points to a re-veg situation. Generally from plants that had flowering lights (12/12) then moving them to 24 hour light.

Sounds like you have a "Freak" on your hands....
If you have a camera, I'd like to see pics too.

Peace- OD

Here's some pics of the lil freak. Any advice, information, suggestions, speculations, or anything would be appreciated. After several weeks of growing, I am still uncertain about what this plant is. I mean... I THINK I know, but what a weird pheno!

It also occurs to me that if this is what I think it is, the fact that it doesn't have the prototypical leaf-shape and profile could be quite a boon. Its definitely not as catch-your-eye obvious as a normal plant...

I am going to go out on a limb and say I doubt that is a pot plant.

Though I hope it totally proves me wrong, it could be a number of other plants.

Guess we will know when it comes time to flower..?

That'd be pretty cool if you could breed that mutation into a strain with stable single leaves. It could be a new stealth strain that looks nothing like a normal pot plant

I totally agree that it could be another plant. I've done a little looking, though, and I can't find specific ones that I think it might be. Do you have any ideas? Pics of identified plants that you think it might be? Even speculations would be appreciated. Thanks for any info.
