If you were to take pollen from one genetic line and pollinate a female from another genetic line, the resulting progeny would be F1's (assuming pollen wasn't feminized). If you select two of these F1's and cross them to refine certain traits, the resulting progeny would be F2's.

If you were to use an F1 and cross that with one of the original parents of said F1, that would result in a backcross, aka Bx.
