I know really nothing about MJ. I have been smoking it on and off since I was 14 years old, and now I am in my late twenties. As silly as this sounds, I just learned that different strains give different highs. I always wondered why for the past few years, I just could not seem to handle the stuff. I am not a regular smoker, but I am no angel either. For something to do this winter I wanted to start a plant or two, to see if I can get some weed I can enjoy. Most of the stuff I have tried as of late are the kinds that gets you so bent out of shape, you get paranoid and tired, and just want to go to bed. I used to love getting high, and now I really try to avoid it. I don't know what the stuff is that we have gotten the off time, but it was from BC Canada. Very nasty stuff, for an unseasoned smoker.

What I would like to know is if there are any strains that might give a person a more uplifting, productive and happy type of high. I know some may flame me for asking, but I honestly don't like to lose control, and sit there like a moron for several hours. I have read that some other experience this as well. I hate getting paranoid, and hate wrecking my whole evening. I used to love smoking, but now just can't seem to handle the stuff.

Is there anything lighter out there that I could give a try. My hubby is the same way I am, as well as other people I know. It is so hard to say no to a nice big fatty, and when a person is not stoned amoung a bunch of other people that are, it is not a good time either. So, if you can't beat them join them... When moments like this arise, I would love to have my own stash of weed, so I can party with my friends, but not lose control after a hoot or two.

I have a nice little hydro set up at home, not big at all, but it will suffice. We have some Afganie going, but I don't know if this will knock me out of control or not. I want something I can handle, the big wimp that I am... What is the point of having a winter hobby when you can't or won't take part in the end results?

Please be easy on me, I am really new to this.

if your growing hydro you do know that makes the weed your growing much stronger?
maybe you should just give soil a try if you want some low key weed, and if you look on seed banks they usaly say what kinda high it gives you and im sure you could find a seed with a mellow high
good luck
later

No one will be flaming you because of those questions, rest about it...

Basically, you'll have to devide the strains in 2 different types; Sativas and Indicas.

Sativas tend to give you a cerebral high, with no body (at least with some ) and indicas tend to the heavy body high kind of stone...

The problem is, sativas tend to be harder to grow; your best bet should be a hybrid, with the sativa high and the indica grow pattern...

It seams you have more of a problem with the quality of the high; it is normal and that's why there re so may strains;
Marleys Collie from Sensi seedbank, Rosetta Stone from Bross Grimm and Romberry from BCGA should give you what you're looking...if you consider that tooooooo strong, go with blueberry or a kush...

Hydroponicaly grown weed is not nessasarily more potent then grass grown in soil. When you harvest can affect the potency, more white hairs less potent more red/orange hairs more potent, more or less. I would also like to suggest a behavior modification to increase your enjoyment of the herb smoke. I find that I need to maintain something of a tolenrence else I am a two hit loser. I do this by smoking a little every night like at least half a bowl before I go to bed, talk about good dreams , so it doesn't really mess with anything. Also another thing I do to help 'maintain' is once again smoking more. When I am really feeling it and want to come down I just smoke more. It seems to me like there is a point that if you go beyond you'll just start to come down or maybe you go up but I find that the disorientation diminishes but that I have a bit more 'visuals' so maybe I start to trip and then come down after a bit without a real peak or something I just know that a some of the time I smoke to come down and don't to stay buzzed, maybe it's the drugs . Of course you'll probably want to try this at home first. And if you really want some mellow smoke try growing some schwag seeds the product will be much nicer, not so harsh ****ty shaky, but will not be as potent as 'designer' strains. Hope this helps and remember like I told my sister drugs are not for everyone.

You guys are all too nice!

I could handle pot for the most part. However, there are the odd times that I have had stuff that put me into oblivion for hours and then I went to sleep. Then there are times when I smoke that I think I am more brilliant them a rocket scientist (good thing I am too stoned at the time to know the real truth). I just never really knew that there were different strains that gave different highs. That would explain a whole lot to me. I just wish that people knew more about what they were buying. I have never bought pot from an actual "dealer", I just get my friends to sell me the odd couple of joints

The last stuff I smoked was so damned nasty, I never want to come across it again. I had three good puffs, and although it crept up on me, I was a goner.Generally I can moderate how much I smoke, but this stuff brutal. It also has been years that I have smoked the weed that makes you laugh like an idiot and gives you a generally happy night.

I will have to check out the seed banks, but we have already started this Afganie stuff. I do not know if it is a sativa or Indica. The writing on the seed vial says afganie, and a unreadable word after it that almost looks like the word "fennel". Beats the heck outta me. I put my seedlings their hydro set up on December first. I can say so far this has been a breeze. I don't touch the plants at all aside of yesterday when I pruned all the big huge leaves that were over shadowing the little, but bountiful leaves. I just check my nutrients and PH everyday, and make sure everything is alright. Now for the fun part of trying to sex them and pick my mother plant.

I can say that even though I did not enjoy the last time I smoked up, I can say it is a blast watching those seedlings grow up. On the average, how big should a plant be after around 14 days? I know it varies, but is there an ball park average? My big plant out of the bunch was about 14" tall yesterday until I pruned it. Now it is about 11" tall, and very robust. Very stinky too. I hope I am doing it right, but I just figured I would treat it like a garden plant. They all look 100% better only 24 hours after pruning.

Thanks all of you. I am really enjoying myself. I have so many more stupid "newbie" questions, but I will wait awhile. I am reading lots of books on hydro, but around here books on just weed are just not available. This forum is a fanatstic educational tool. Thanks for your opinions all.

But your afghani should be a strong heavy high...unless it's an hybrid...

Speaking personally I like Afghani because its a strong heavy high but, myself, I get no weird paranoia or other fun effects like that from it. I find it a nice relaxed almost opiate like buzz. A contrast from say, Skunk#1, which I find is a lot more trippy.

If you're inexperienced with weed then moderation has to be the key though, until you learn how to control the effects. You are far more likely to have bad effects if you're totally caned

Are you giving enough light to the plants? Afghani tends to grow very stocky but stretches when the light is low. 14" sounds a bit tall to me for 2 weeks. When I last grew these, a 2 week old Afi was (I think, from memory) about 6" tall or less, but had loads of sets of leaves which appeared to be on top of each other. It stretches big time when you turn the light down to 12/12 to force flowering.

hey diana,welcome

i have been growing a pure afgani strain and would have to agree with you on the paranoia thing.but im always paranoid with a house full of plants.also the afgani strain(pure)is one hell of a buzz that causes me to eat the entire house and knok me on my ass.the way i have seen to basically moderate the buzz and amount i smoke is by smoking out of a one hitter, but i still love nothing more than a fatty though.i have two forums in the my cannibus images, the 1st being showin off and the here we grow again.in both of these threads i have touched base on prety much every aspect of growing with the pure afgani.(not that theirs much difference)but generally it an easy strain to work with.i am interested to see how your plants turn out hydroponically because im strictly dirt.i feel i can fit more plants in a room with dirt than with hydro.

keep up the good work.

keep on rollin...............

Well I guess I will have to go through your search to see which seed banks are reputable. I have been staying up so late reading stuff on this forum. I am very intrigued by it all. I live in Canada, and hope that they are not so harsh on us with helicopters and invading privacy. It blows my mind that people go after the typical grower, instead of going after the meth labs and anyone whom has anything to do with drugs that are chemically produced. I am sure that there are the growers that had house fires, but typically I can't see a grower blowing up a house, or having seriously dangerous chemicals around the house.

At the present, I have four plants under a 1000w halo bulb. I now have them under light for 16 hours and off for eight. I read on this forum that I can do this, and cause immature buds in order to help me determine the sex. I am totally relying on this forum, so if I ask a question about something, it is because there are so many opinions that I want the best one. I also two little guys in dirt, since they were weaker, my hubby wanted to throw them, but I did not have the heart to do this. They are in pots in my grow area (spare bathroom for the time being). We are building an area in the basement to have our mother under a 400w light 24/7, and a seperate room for the clones. We have been thinking of the hydro tubes for the clones that we saw in the high times issue just recently. The room is almost completed, but we still have some things to get for it. Since this is our first time ever, we have been reading on how to ventillate the rooms, provide proper Co2, and ways to stop the smell. There is so much that you have to know, but it has been fun as well as intimidated. The plants are easy, since you just let them do their thing, at least so far. They are now two weeks old. They are three weeks old from the time of germination if you want to get picky. I just hope they don't end up being males since they seem to be growing so fast.

I also was curious that in the spring, if it would be harmful just to start normal flower seeds in trays under the light with the pot. They would not be in the water, and would be in dirt in those little plastic pots, on seperate tables. I thought I could benifit from saving a whole bunch of money for summer annuals this way. Is this bad if the plants are kept away from the pot?
I am dying to try some plants in the back yard, and hope they don't get killed off by the crappy weather we have here. It is worth a try...

I am off to read on the forums again. I am so glad that I found this place, it is some fantastic reading.

I do have a stupid question for you here. Although the seeds are supposed to be the same strain (started from seeds), one plant has seven leaves on the more mature folliage. The other one has nine. I thought someone had told me that this is a difference between Indica and sativa. Don't laugh, but you know how rumours get around. One of my plants has a stalk on it that is about 3/4" at the base already. They are not tall in comparision to how thick the folliage is.

I better stop blabbing since I have to go and check the PH levels and nutrients and mark them down in my log book. I have been documenting everything so far, so at least I can go back to the notes and perhaps see what I did right or wrong in the future. Thanks again guys, you are a really nice bunch of people.
