Alternating nodes, or just nodes for that matter!

It seems to me that as well as being an excellent reference tool for all us members, the Grow Guide is especially useful in answering the more common "newbie" questions. One that I've personally seen asked many, many times, and come to think of it, it was the first question I ever asked here at HC.com - "when to start flowering".

It seems everytime someone asks that question, we get responses about alternating nodes being a sign that the plant has reached maturity, and it's a good time to flower, keeping in mind the stretch the plants will go through during flower. The Grow Guide's Vegetative Growth & Flowering section on flowering says "Since you have your plant in the 24/7 cycle let the plant grow for as long as you like. A plant may double, triple even quadruple its' height when flowering. Sativas can stretch up to 4 times there height and Indicas generally double in height. Some strains call for up to 8 weeks of vegetative growth. Your height, yield and potency will all depend on the strain and the way it was grown. As our aim is for bud, and lots of it, we will try and avoid massive plants unless we have the light to provide them with, otherwise we get a plant with huge stems, and only bud at the top 9 or 10 inches. " so maybe we can reword this, or just add a sentence about alternating nodes?

Now this brings me to my next suggestion... telling the newbies what a node is, what an alternating node is, and for that matter what all those other terms that will be used here in the forums, like cotyledons, etc. Now as for how to tell them, I figure with either the addition of a Glossary of terms, or making the less common known words hyperlink to a definition, or possibly a combination of both! It would be nice if pictures could be added too, for demonstrating what a node is, what an alternating node is, what a cotyledon is, etc.

If anyone else thinks these are good ideas, please say so! If anyone thinks these ideas are crap, please say so!

Here's another really nice one by cecil_b that rick mentioned he wanted added to the main page's cultivation links. Maybe a combination of the two in the Grow Guide, hyperlinking words in the guide to their spots in the glossary?

This thread could be useful in identifying plant parts, such as the cotyledons... although I don't think there's anything in there explaining what a node is, let alone alternating nodes... Maybe real plant pics would be better...?

All the stuff I've mentioned is definately available all over the forums, but they aren't likely to come up in a search (might have plenty of references to cotyledons, or alternating nodes, but they won't necessarily explain what they are) and I think including them in the Grow Guide would greatly reduce these common, redundant questions coming up in the forums.
