Gravel... bad?

In Vegitative Growth and Flowering section:

As a rule 1/2 inch of gravel or another suitable, high draining mixture at the bottom of the pot will help to prevent this problem and will also stop the plant from drowning if it’s over-watered.
Now I've read a few times on this site that gravel or rocks are a bad idea for a few reasons...

Ideas?

Interesting link... I've always used clay pebbles at the bottom of my pots for drainage but if I'm short on those I do use gravel, in future I will now be avoiding gravel as Brindie's link in that thread was explained by cassiusclay...

I guess that means those clay pebbles are still good at the bottom of pots.

I forgot the gravel...Guess I'm glad!

The girls are lovely, dark and green, and not a whit of gravel in there. The perlite seems to be getting enough oxygen into the mix. Serendipity strikes again!

While it does start off by saying gravel it also follows with "high draining mixture at the bottom of the pot " which should convey "the idea" that whatever would be fine as long as it allowed the water to flow freely out of the pot. I mean they do make itty bitty pea gravel and not just big clunky rocky gravel. More to the point the information we are trying to convey is that you want good drainage from the pot. This will not only allow water to be released but also allow more air in as well. I think it is pretty clear on what we were trying to convey for a primer.
