Big trouble due to rain?
permalink

Greetings,

I have a few outdoor plants, all in different stages of flowering. We went through June and July with barely 1/2" of rain and I lugged water every other day. Now we have had over 12" in the last 3 days and my babies are dying! Some leaves are yellow but many are turning gray and shriveling up. What can I do?

Help!!!

And here I though this board was for SERIOUS growers. I'd sure appreciate the help if anyone has any non-smartass ideas.

try to make openings and/or facilitate some sort of air flow w/ your cover.

are they in mounds so the soil will drain down to somewhere?

They are in raised beds, so even though there is 1" standing water around them, the roots are not sitting in water. Seriously, covering them is not an option and logistically ridiculous. The rain has stopped so covering them is also not needed.

I was really hoping for some answer involving something I could add to them, like a fert, that would stop the wilting. I am afraid to knee jerk and over fert as well.

I think the best thing to do is to try to cover the soil around the plants with some kind of plastic cover. If you can lie the plastic on the ground so it drains the water away from the plants it should help. Where do you live? I'm here in NY and it's been raining quite a bit but we're expecting sunny weather for the next week or so. Just try to let the plants absorb all the rain water for awhile. Don't water them for a few days after it stops raining. They like to absorb water and get sort of dry. It also strengthens the flowers that they are producing. {We hope}!!

Hope this helps.

Thanks Franco. I'm in the midwest and we're supose to get a little more rain, but nothing like the 12" we've had over the last 4 days. The sun is actually out right now. The beds are in an area that would not allow for any plastic to keep the little standing water at bay. They are dispursed around a low meadow "hidden" near clumps of trees. Any attempt to cover them or tarp them would be the equivalent of saying "Hey...Look what I'm growing"!!

I don't know of a solution that works for you, is the drainage shitty from the raised bed? I have had the same wheather and my plants look excellent from all the rain.. can't figure out why your's wouldn't be doing as healthy. Overwatering can usually be cured by good sunlight, but since your getting more rain I doubt that will fix the problem, i can't see how adding any type of fert would help pick them up. Maybe dig a small trench away from them to help water flow out of the area?
