Sounds like scale insects, swordfish. They secrete a sugary substance called "honey dew" while they are sucking plant juices. The ants are attracted to the honey dew. Control the scale insects with insecticidal soap. The ants will leave when the food source is eliminated.

i acutally plant in ant hills. i have noted less deer predation of mine sets. i use the hill, after i turn it over with a shovel and maybe spread a bit of corn meal or maltomeal about. ive done this for quite a few years and utilize hills just above the local flood plain (vs. those @ higher elev.)and in the midst of alder thickets. (easier to camo trails). this werks well fer me and be mine

Jed - What does the cornmeal do? Maybe it makes a difference what kind of ants they are.

A good bit of info.... thank you!

There really is no right way to grow, you have to resonate with a style and learn what you can,
tweak it to your own style and raise the bar each grow... OD '07

corn meal, malt o meal, cream o wheat. Da wifey has been using these fer yrs. when ants invade the house ea. yr. @ summers end. ------------------------------------------------------ • ---------> Piles of instant dry grits or instant coco wheats or Malt-O-Meal® in or on nests or near runways will expand the
ants bodies and may kill them. Sprinkle Comet® or food-grade DE on the top of nests to dessicate them.
Sprinkle Equal® to kill them.
• Some ants hate aromatic plants like garlic, mint, lavender, and chives.
• Blend orange peels and pulp and water and pour directly on the ant hill. Add a little soap or a mash of hot <----------- this is a cut paste from ---> Yahoo! Answers - What home remedy kills ants by mixing cornmeal with something else? <----about non toxic ant control . ive been trying it this year when i invaded the ant hills to try and 'calm them down' , so to speak, so my clones can take and not get overrun. i flatten the hill some, vigoursly turn over the middle, turn over the perimeter, add the meal and RUN!!!!! this doesnt 'kill the hill' but it do calm it down enuf to grow ganja on top. i believe these are the northern pyramid ant, which are common to the canadian/nortrhern us boreal.
