Early planting light schedule
permalink

I want to get my plants out nice and early this year. Security is one reason, since my lease runs out in June and the landlord will want to show the apartment before that. I'd also like to have some monsters come october....

So after looking at the light charts for my area, it looks like I'll have slightly less than 13 hours of daylight on april 15th and this is when I plan to put them out after a month of veg time. Anyone have any advise on keeping them from flowering/revegging? I was thinking I'd do 14 hours light for their time indoors to smooth the transition... does this make sense?

Hey Trancer,
April 15 should be fine. I usually get mine out around that time give or take a few days. The days are already longer and getting longer every day. The only thing I ever worry about is frost. Just keep a close eye on the weather and cover them if it is gonna freeze. Around here the frost is mostly done by the first week in May.
I think you should be fine with your light schedule as well. I have clones that I keep alive from the year before and they stay under flos about 18 hours a day. I've never have had a problem with them trying to flower after going outdoors.

Last frost around here usually comes in february...except last year when there was a late one that took out a bunch of the strawberries and citrus crops.

So a more normal lighting schedule isn't an issue for most people, like 16/8 or 18/6?

I did exactly what your talking about last April 15 and everything I put out re-vegged or was not worthy of smoking. I started twenty two seedlings in early March indoors. I vegged for around six weeks and placed these 12-14 inch perfect plants to a remote outdoor location. I did adjust my light cycle downwards to 16/8 but what I found out was as the days got longer the plants had already decided to flower and I had bud on the 4th of July. Bad Bud.
On the other hand I jokingly put a seed out along the edge of my lawn without prepping anything mid March and got a single plant produceing over six pounds of bud. I had placed all my faith on my indoor starts and planting a seed in my yard was an afterthought. Dont get anxious your plants can turn into monsters going out in mid May. I wish I had followed the advice of Outdoors at the time. I will not have the same opportunity this year nor do I want the responsibility of worrying about super big plants in the first place, to much work trimming haze varietys.

Thanks for the experience swordfish, I knew somebody around here has had reveg issues.
Did you start the indoor seedlings on 24/0 and then move down to 16/8? This is why I was thinking 14/10 from seed and then when they go outside the days will be getting longer, hopefully keeping them in veg.

That trimming work must be insane...

I wait until May 1st to put my plants outside. Earlier than that and you are taking chances that are not worth it to me.

There is nothing positive to be gained by putting out a plant 2 weeks earlier than that....

Peace- OD

There really is no right way to grow, you have to resonate with a style and learn what you can,
tweak it to your own style and raise the bar each grow... OD '07
