Hey there..I have a question....the temperature at night gets a little cool here sometimes...45 degrees sometimes, once in awhile there will be frost on the lawn. Does anyone know if frost will hurt my little girls?. A friend of mo=ine told me that frost is actually benificial to the plant (???).
Does anyone know for sure?.

frost iz not nice. the hemp plant is a sub tropical to tropical plant. it doesnt like frost.if frost collects on ur babies it will iether stop THC crystal production or the plant may go into shock, its rare but it has happenened. if the frost continues transplant ur babies into a pot and take them inside !

Hi CanadianBud,
I'm here in Canada too, and although we haven't got a frost yet, it's threatened a couple of nights already. I harvested my girls halfway, coz I was worried I'd lose it to the frost. It's been not too bad out lately, but I've been covering what's left at night, just in case. The sunny days have really gotten the resins flowing and I almost wish I'd left it all out there now!

An indica dominant girl is best adapted to withstand frost. Another factor is moisture. If the girl is well watered, she will tolerate light, overnight frosts no problem. In fact, there is ample anecdotal evidence that in the finishing stages of maturation a light frost makes for a sweeter smoke. This is also my experience.

Hopefully, your strain of choice is a sativa or higher sativa to indica ratio (for an earlier finish). I say this because my location is 2hrs s-w of T.O. bording the shores of Huron. For those non Canucks this is on the same latitude as N California..

Early season frost is harmful but hearty clones can withstand 1-2. I usually start mid May - mid june and pull off 1/4# /.
Fall harvest usually winds up around mid sept - halloween.
but can and has in the past five years end by the 1st sept - or as in '98 (i had 7 walkerburn female seedlings) harvest dec 23 (that day was 25C or approx. 82F). On jan 1st i was stuck in T.O. on side street with 2' of snow under my car.

So use caution and good judgement. Check on-line at the weather centre to find seasonal averages for your area. My plants can usually take 2-4 frosts without turning purple or losing cannabinoids.

Find a buddy that already has a proven strain for a similar climate and just get clones from them. Even if you have to return a favour it'll be worth it!!

cheers,

liv'in easy in S-W Ontario, EH!!!....

a little long winded but it's the first post for an old guerilla. TALK IT UP Ontarians.

if there is a night when you are sure that your plants will be hit by frost you can spray the plants with water. This will potentially insulate them decently for the night. The way that this phenomena works is the heat from the water molecules are transferred into the plant as the water freezes. It is questionable the length in which you can continue using this type of trick though it may be effective for a once in a while occurence of frost. Obviously, if the weather is too drastic your plants will likely die.
