how to prepare this soil?

I have a question on how i should prepare this spot.

CONDITIONS:
-In woods, where the soil is very dark. When you dig down you hit water level at alittle over 2feet. The soil here is dark and as you get deeper gets soggy till you hit water, but as you dig you dig up many big healthy worms. The water then flows in the hole and fills about 2/3 of it. Some of the holes i did dig up clay right before or as i hit the water level.

What needs to be done? is this water filling the holes bad, and drown the roots?

Should i use pots and cut the bottoms off so roots can expand into ground and towards water? Fill in holes with potting soil and top soil and raise bed alittle? Or what?

Thumbs up

Leaf mulch is a great soil to grow in,if the water is 2ft down,i wouldn't worry to much about it.I have grown in these conditions and had some fantastic crops.the worms say it all when it comes to healthy soil and you need not worry about watering them as the water is allready there. If your realy worried about the water then you can mound the soil up and still not wory about them, sounds like you found the perfect spot.. . . nice find..BNG

thanks...the soil seems like itd be great..I dug the holes and was hitting water 2' down, but then water would raise and fill the hole with only about 5-10" not filled varyin from hole to hole.. I'm curious to what will happen when i go back to fill the holes in with potting soil and or top soil since the soil i dug out was full of roots

Being its outdoors what can i do to balance the PH..doesn't adding just a little dolmite lime to soil keep soil at a ph of 7?

Did you check the pH of the soil?

Lime raises soil pH, you will want to know the pH before you ammend. Get one of those little kits in the nurseries with tablets. Costs about 5$.

You'll be better prepared that way. I would guess that the the soil is on the lower side of neutral which is perfect.

I'd take the roots out of the soil (what kind of roots?) and use some of that soil to mix with your compost and put it back in. If you go with straight compost you won't have to worry about pH.

Best of luck to you..

Do you have a slope that you could dig a chanel to get rid of excess water?,10" is a little to much water and could cause root rot.the bottomless pots would help this or mounding up the soil as mentioned b4. Is it the wet season where you are? as the water level could change and not be such a worry.but worms don't like water and are afraid of drowning, but if they are there in abundance I would think you would be ok.

yea the snow melted and it rains abit this time of year and warms up alot during summer..

Is it cheap to buy compost? I have 15 2x2x2 holes that i need to fill and mound up alittle (much easier than buying pots)

roots are mainly from trees and little trees, and theres patches of grass here and there..I dug holes and through all the soil and roots to side and watched the water fill the holes and then it got dark. I assume when i throw soil in holes the water level will drop alittle.

Yes, compost is relatively cheap. You can buy it in bags. One bag for 2 holes. should be gold.

The water level won't drop.... water level is the water level. If the water is really 10" below the surface and it doesn't drop as the summer rolls on you could run into trouble.
Now I think you should consider putting a 5 gallon pot with no bottom about 2 inches below the soil level. Give those roots some room..

the water level is about 1.5' to 2.5' under the ground (varying per hole), but when i dig down and hit the water level it fills the hole, like it rises and then theres only 5"-10" of deepness in the hole left since about 5" to 1.5feet of the hole have filled up with water

if i buy compost do i need to still fert or will it be fine? ..thank outdoors, for as long as ive used this site youve always been one of the most informational people around

you could allowies just screen the exsiting dirt and do a 50/50 compost and pre exsiting dirt and you will have to fertilize later in the season...

YOu might want to use some ferts later in flowering but you should be good to go for veg with the compost and your soil. You can always add some ferts if watering is necessary.
Probably somewhere along the line you'll want to supplement some calcium since MJ love it so and needs it.

There's no way to really know how your plants will progress but from what you describe it appears you have some nice rich organic matter in your soil already. I'd still use the pots without bottoms to give you that added "raised bed" benefits.
