Once again I am an animal lover and did not wish to see the rabbit I caught in the humane trap expire due to the heat. Normally I relocate them after catching them. I do not believe in putting rabbit heads on stakes as a reminder to other rabbits. It's been said rabbits and spider mites can destroy your crop however and fencing in my opinion is the best solution rather than trapping.
When I was a youngster my dad took me hunting for rabbits, lizards, birds and general plinking. I never persued it later on and felt bad about all those little critters I killed for target practice.
Trying to impress dad with what a good marksman I was was probably where my head was at at the time some 45 years ago.

Daddy-o,.....not too sure that would be a wise idea

I am happy to know that most people here are animal lovers. Of course there are going to be problems outdoors but it comes with the territory and i find it best to just deal with it respectfully. In this I mean be kind to all living creatures.
The stuffed guard dog was so tastefully done and i so appreciated the humour also
The only thing that might be more scary would be a stuffed coyote

Anyway i just got back from planting 4 more and my little dog got stung by a bee.

This year I am trying to grow out some strains that I've never grown outside before. In fact I've only grown one of the strains through flower inside (the mango). So I am a little nervous to see how they do. Outdoors this year it is mango, unknown purple, unknown that looks heavily indica, the church, northern lightsXbig bud. But mostly mango and purple. In my part of the Pacific Northwest the weather this time of year is seldom a problem as far as mold goes. It is really a matter of how soon the wet weather sets in during September and October. I lost about half of the harvest last year (purple kush and papaya) to gray mold late in flower.
As far as critters go. Amazingly I had a herd of elk walk right through a patch, hoof prints right next to the plants, without causing any damage. I'm amazed they didn't snack on any plants. Only concern I have is the well trampled trail they left to the patch and hunters following it in autumn.
oops, nearly forgot. I'm not sure of the mango's parentage Lacy. I got some cuts from a grower who said that he was also unsure but thought it was KC. Not sure if it came out in the photo, but the strain looks to have more sativa then the other strains I have out this year (thinner leaves, less dense tight internode veg stage compared with others). Suppose I should just call it a complete unknown, but it is apparently some type of mango. Wish more growers kept things straight and labeled!

This little squirrel may look cute but can do way more damage than any grasshoppers can and squirel soup is sounding pretty good about now, sorry Lacy.
This is the type of varmit that destroyed my gorrilla patch a few months back. Over a dozen plants eaten. The reason I know it was a squirrel is because it is the only type of animal that can fit through the fencing I acquired and I have wittnessed this guy come and go through a conventional chain link fence. He just scampers through the holes.
Whats a grower to do? Snakes on chains, preferably rattlesnakes may be an option. There are plenty around here as well. I could make little collars for them and tie them to the base of my plants so they can eat any rodent that comes within 6 feet of my plants. Might discourage rippers as well.

The squirrel is having lunch right now in the shade with a bowl of water. I hope he likes the biscotti and sunflower seeds as a chaser until the morning when ill drive him out of the area.

Relocating rabbits and who knows whats next is getting frustrating. Just saw a documentary about RACOONS killing house cats. After seeing this show I concluded this is how I possibly lost my cat of some twelve years awhile back. I have seen racoons in my community and dont wish to find one in my yard near my plants. I do hope this is the end to the circus that my backyard is becomeing. Lacy, I do believe a stuffed coyote soaked in predator urine may need to come online shortly. Do gun shops carry this stuff?

Most of my growing experience has been from bagseed so i really have a true appreciation for getting the right strain for your individual growing area. I live in central ontario canada so picking the right strain is a must otherwise the season just might not be long enough.
One thing about the mango and other afgani (purp-like) strains is that they have thick condense buds. By the late autumn here it is usually cold and damp by then making these types of strains prone to mold and mildew. Last year we had frost one month earlier than the previous year and one week later had the best weather all summer. Bud mold is common because of this and mango is one to watch out for. Its great that it is an early indica flowerer but if you don't have the persistent hot weather to finish flowering, you might run into mold problems. I have thrown away so much bud due to this reason that now i want to be more specific as to what strains i put out. Godbud and northern lights #5 is suppsed by be good for my area but ialso like to experiment; and why not, i had the clones to do so.
I really hope that NYC diesel turns out even though she is a 10 week flowerer.
one great thing abouot these types of sativas is that the buds are great and flavourful BUT they are also airy enough that mold is never an issue.
good subject heal.

I've had the same thing happen with many of my plants also but out of all the plants I have grown outdoors, i haven't had much trouble with animals or pests of any kind including humans.
It does sound like you got the kc version of mango but then again there could be other seedbanks with mango as well as those two. Both these mangos go purplish at the end of their cycle and look stunning indoors or out. BCmango is one of my favorites and is by far my favorite indica. Very flavourful. mango with hints of black hash throughout. The structure of these girls are very hardy. I cant ait to see pictures of them in the fall to see the colour change

Ok i can sympathize completely. A dozen plants. Ouch! Thats had gotta hurt.
Sorry.
I find squirrels to be a total menance to society and trhing to trick them or get rid of them can be difficult but I see you caught one Besides growing cannabis I also do a lot of perennial gardening and find these critters to be the most annoying of them all. i have all kinds of stories to tell you about them. first of all the east all my spring bulbs, makes holes in my gardens, chew holes in stuff, eat all the bird seed and are a general nuisance around here. one spring I was out in my front garden and was trying to entertain my shepherd while I kept myself busy gardening so decided to tell my dog to go get the squirrel. Saying 'squirrel' to my dog sent her in an anxious spin to want to hunt it.
A few minutes later while planting my petunias a dead squirrel is then spit down onto the ground in front of me

So how do i scold her for that? I said get the squirrel so she did

My hubby thinks that story is the funniest and is proud of her for it

Ok I HAVE to admit that it was pretty funny.

YES i agree that animals can be a huge burden. Raccoons are vicious things and have great dexterity as well. I certainly wasn't disputing the fact that animals can be a huge burden BUT i don't think we need to glorify the killing of them like SOME people have.
Ok I'm over it

I'm going out today but should have some pictures up later tonight or tomorrow of some of my girls. Like i mentioned, i;m very late this year planting outdoors but i made up for it in quantity
