Plants burn under light?
permalink

Well the temp in my house is about 70-75 or so, and my 3 little seedlings are under a 60 watt light in this little hiddin container thing I have. In this container its about 85-90 degrees because the light keeps it really hot.

Since the light is about 5 inches from my plants, will this kill my plants like burn them or anything?

Edit, the actaully plastic frame on the outside of the light is like 100 degree lol.

Yeah, that might be too hot. Put the back of your hand about an inch or two above the soil if its too hot for your hand its probably too hot for your plant.

Have the seeds sprouted yet?
What type of light are you using?
60 watt sounds like it would be incandescent... that would not be a good bulb for this .
Look into some CFL's there cheap about $12 for 3 of them.
Go with the kind that saiys "daylight"; those are better for the first stages of growing. later on you can add some "SoftWhite" or better yet an HPS.

Good Luck with your grow and aim high...

well the light Im using is what my mom used to grow tomatoes in side before lol, its a blue bulb, and I'm only using it for a while until it warms up outside. I think 2 of my plants are dead already anyway. I'm thinking this mainly because its kinda brown on the stem thats above ground and it doesnt stand up lol, its just laying there and this other one is just barley above the dirt and hasnt grown at all, but the leaves are appearing.
Well atleast I know what to do now to prevent this in the future.

Also can you look on walmart.com or something and find me some of those lights so I don't buy the wrong ones or anything. Also does it matter what kind of socket I screw the light into... or do all lamps output the same.

Edit, and how long would I use that cfl light before getting a nother etc.

Edit again...

downstairs I found a 75w soft white light thats round and not one of the curly ones. Will this due for next few days until I can get a curly one or does this one get just as hot.

Edit again..

I just found a 13 watt, 120 volt CFL thats all spiral like lol

EDIT AGAIN..

My sister just gave me this light she never used. Its a UV light which outputs UV rays. It was for her lizard but she never got to use it.

Its a 26 watts, full spectrum, standard incandesenct. 10% UVB output and 30% UVA output.

Its a repti sun 10.0 UVB desert light made for repitles. Think it would be any good for growing the plants from the beginning?

Don't give up on them all just yet. I thought this one was dead and left it there anyways, two weeks later it looked like this...

about two weeks after that she looks as good as any other plant...

Most CFL's use a standard socket.
Walmart.com: GE CFL Daylight Light Bulb: 26 Watt (100W Equiv), 6-Pk: Home Improvement

Up until your ready to put your plants into flower. and some still use CFL's to flower but usually the "soft white CFL"
Edit again...

That might be even hotter. Just add more space between the current light and the cup, these guys don't need much light right now anyways.
Best of luck
