Geocaching and its effects for gorilla growers

I stumbled on this topic while visiting another site and was blown away when I found there to be around a dozen of these caches around my plot. This might explain why I sometimes encounter an individual at 4am hiking near where my plot lies. Maybe after some research on the caches in my area, there was a story of a man who would go out late at night and early in the morning doing his cache thing. You may want to check out this site www.geocacheing.com and see how many of these things are in your neck of the woods.
Weird hobby but I can see where some would get very serious about this treasure hunting or hide and seek. These adventurers could stumble upon your plot, so beware.

good call....

i never made the connection, because i dont go outdoors.

but geocaching is alot bigger than you think. very mom and pop too....lots of families do it, kids groups etc.

they are all about roaming around to the weirdest most remote spots, and believe me they are typically the type of folk that would phone the police if they stumbled across a patch.

definately check the geocaching site, maybe get a cheapie gps and figure out where your plot is......

good looking out swordfish! these geocachers are all over the place in the desert. gotta keep an eye out for em, never know who might wander down range.

The timelines on some of the comments and clues indicates there are some dedicated cacher's in my region and some very very close to a spot I have. If you enter your zip code on the site you will be surprised at what you may find. They have a google map feature that further will pinnpoint your location in relation to the nearby cache's.

Indeed I've had some friends who were into it.. and it is a really cool hobby that will introduce you to some of the best secret places of an area in any part of the world..

I never even thought about how it would interfere with outdoor growing. Very good call posting about this Swordfish.

Funny enough someone recently discovered a geocache in a drainage area near the local university and called it in as a bomb threat. Brought in the bomb squad, closed down the campus and everything only to discover it was just a little geocache.

With this becoming more and more popular it's definitely something to consider when doing any guerrilla growing.

swordfish thanks for the post. I had never even heard tell of this hobby but it appears alot of other ppl in my area have!

There are 6 of these things within 5 and a half miles of me in numerours directions.

Im not sure of the exact grid coordinates of any of my plots. I thought to pace them off and mark them out on a map but didnt want "evidence" laying around if they were found and i ended up suspect somehow.

I think im pretty safe judging by the rough guesses i got on distance.

ALthough its nice to know this little hobby exists for future reference!

I think these people have to much time on their hands to go looking for Altoid box's in the wilderness. On one cache near by I would need to decipher a spiecies of bird from a drawing and additional co-ordinates will be given for the actual find. Has anyone either participated or found one of these caches? Can you find them with the maps alone or is a GPS unit mandatory? I went out today looking for one in my area and all I found was a blue plastic pill bottle that med pot had occupied. Im sure that wasnt the cache. If I find one I want to put a nice bud inside. This is a big game to these folk and they prowl about at all hours placing these capsules about and coming back online to report their findings.

So I guess the moral of all this is if you have been trying to find that ideal patch for your garden where know one will be prowling about, check this site first for any caches in the immediate area where people may come to play this silly game. Preemptive planning before you plant.

You need a GPS. And don't knock it like you have, completely dismissing geocaching as a "silly game." Do you know how much fun a 2 year gets out of wlaking around the woods looking for a cache filled with stickers or something? It really is a good time, and good, clean fun with the family.

And don't leave a bud inside one of the caches. Small children do participate, and from what I understand this site is about being a responsible marijuana cultivator, not a guy who would be willing give pot to kids as a joke just to show those pesky parents how stupid they are.

We have our fun, let other people have theirs.

Im only concerned about the security of my grow site and giving a Heads up about this hobby to other outback growers. I wouldnt put bud in a cache that could be gotten to by toddlers. I concede not to donate buds in any cache's I may find.

After saying that, it doesnt mean I have to embrace the activity or have nothing but contempt for it. Im on a growing web site and anything that is a threat to that end is fair game to attack and these folks can prove to be a liability to our little hobby.

sold my gps ..after initially thinking it could be useful realized it was not worth the expense or the obvious increased security threat.

Dont really need one to map spots anyway.

I didnt do it this year but ive paced off planting before.

All you have to do is get a map of your area and if its not grided off take the map scale and do so w/ a ruler.

Find a kilometer/mile distance, and pace it off.

Get yerself a compass, pace off into the woods, and mark changes in direction as you go on the map.

Technology is over rated.
