Experience with the Tropf Blumat system?
permalink

Hi everyone,
I haven't been around for a good while, lots of other things requiring my attention over the winter months. But... I'm back and have a question.

Does anyone have experience with the Tropf Blumat system? This autowatering system uses little ceramic censors to switch a drip system on and off ( a quick google search should bring up the product). The cool thing about the design is that it requires no electricity or even faucet pressure to run, and supposedly automatically detects moisture levels so there should be no over/under-watering due to rain. These can be set up off the grid with a water reservior of some kind if someone was inclined to do that.

I'm interested in setting these up in 4x8 ft raised beds that will be part of a outdoor vegetable project which I will visit once a week for maintenance and organic fertilization. There aren't any posts on these since back in 2005, and so I was wondering if anyone might be able to share some recent experience. Do they let the soil get dry enough? Require lots of maintenance? Uneven watering?

Thanks in advance!

those little things dont use sensors.

the carrot looking thing is soaked in water, then planted in the soil.

the hose is connected to the res, as the carrot dry's out, it creates a vacuum on the line and sucks water from the res back into the carrot thing.

they seem pretty popular, and are basically fool proof. once they are wet the pressure evens out and they stop drawing in water.
