Strange black stains
permalink

Hey,
I'm a first-time grower and I've started to notice these weird black stains developing on two of my plants:

Is this some kind of fungus I should be worried about or am I just paranoid?
On an unrelated note (but not worth starting a new thread for) I live in the new england area and I've had a biblical plague of slugs this year - has anyone else noticed them? They ate thirty of my babies (baby plants, that is, not baby humans). My solution was to lay out a mine field of rock salt, but from now on whenever I see a slug I stomp on him furiously - even in public while people stare at me.
Thanks

Hello gwarf, and welcome to the garden!

Hard to tell from the pics.

How have the temperatures been at night?

edit: DONT think its a fungus yet. looks more like temp issues maybe a deficiency.

You could also try filling out the nursery questionnaire (link in my sig), that should cover all the necessary info.

Yeah, I couldn't tell if it was purpling or if it was necrotic.

Hey ZoomBoom:
I forgot to mention something that may be of importance: only 2 plants out of 10 are showing this discoloring. Its a black coloring around the edges (spiky parts) of the top few leaves. The plants are outdoors and although the humidity in my area has been high (we've had a lot of rain), the hottest day we've had so far was about 95F. Here are some of the relevant answers to the nursery questionnaire:
1) Growing from random (not commercial) seeds
2) the plants are about 2 months old, growing slowly
3) the affected plants are about 8 inches tall (yes, I realize they won't mature before winter )
4) the containers are only temporary, but they're about 6 inches in diameter and 6 inches deep.
5) miracle grow
6) I use water from the natural stream nearby (which is where my fungus theory comes from), I water them on hot days if there hasn't been much rain.
7) I lazily didn't check the pH, even though I have the chemicals for it.
8 - 9) no fertilizers or sprays
10-12) growing outside
13) temps can get up to 95F during the day. I leave them out at night. Very humid due to frequent rain.
14) the soil is pure miracle grow, but again I haven't tested the pH.
15) I've noticed flies, spiders, and slugs - but the slugs are shot on sight.
16) I have zero experience, but I live in woodstock so I consult my friends from time to time.

I'll get back to you on the pH information in a few minutes.

those should look great when they get deep into flowering and start showing more colour. maybe only in the foliage or both. I concur. that doesnt look like mold to me either. or even black in colour.

Thanks shrubz, I guess I was overreacting. B.t.w: the pH of the soil was around 6.8 and the water was about 7, so I don't think the plants are burning. This is all very good news. Thanks to all who responded.
