Question trimming before flowering
permalink

Okay, so this is really the first experience I've had at growing.. We put them in veg. for a little over a month. They got to be about 12" and started alturnating growth. I trimmed most of the larger leaves and changed the light cycle to 12/12 and changed the nutrient solutions to the recommended amounts. It's been almost a week since then. No flowers yet, which I was kind of worried about until I read that some of you guys took weeks to sex. But they keep rapidly growing. Not as much upward as inward. They've gotten really bushy. Should I continue to trim them, or wait until they flower? Will trimming them help to focus energy on flowering? Also, they're begining to get crowded. Any advice?

I wouldnt trim them anymore then what you may have already. let the plants grow.
When flowers start to show you will be able to remove plants that are male helping the over crowding problem.
make sure your space has NO light leaks, this will slow flowering and can cause plants to go hermie.
Give them another week and check them daily. Male preflowers will be stalked and the "balls" will grow in clusters. there may be none there today but tomorrow you could see lots. males (if the same strain as the female) should show first.
The females will have sacs with hairs growing from them.

This thread has a good explination of the 2 and what to look for.

never take any leaves off your plants. the only leaves that should come out of your grow space are the ones laying on the floor that fell of on thier own. they are on there for a reason, its called photosynthisis (not sure if i spelled that one right) anyway they take the energy from your lighting and use it to grow. its like gas in your car. it will not run on empty. all you do when you start trimming leaves is slow down your plants growth drasticly also you are lowering your yeild.
