Question When to count Flower day 1
permalink

Ive been counting Flower day 1 as the first day of 12/12. Would it be better to count it as the first day I see hairs? I know the 'time line' approach is not the way to go, better to go by sight, but just as a rough gauge as so many of us do.
Thanks

I believe most growers, myself included, count the first day of 12/12 as the start of flowering.

Does that apply for outdoor grows also? Because I have two ladies in my backyard, both bagseed, and one showed her pistils on July 21, when the light cycle was 14hr40mins-Light/9hrs21mins-Dark and the other is a female, but has yet to show her pistils. I was wondering the same thing also as to when flowering starts. Now the light cycle is at 13hrs49mins-light/10hrs11mins-Dark. September 9 is when it will be 12/12 where I live.

Even tho that the one DID show her pistils, it don't seem to be where it's supposed to be going on 4 weeks into flowering on Monday. So in my little notebook that i have here, I counted the first day of flowering when I saw the first pistils. Maybe it just started to flower too early and the other one is right on time. That's what it seems like.

Sorry, I should have said "most indoor growers." I haven't grown outdoors and tend to forget anyone does sometimes. But I know plants begin flowering while there is still less than 12 hours of darkness per day so the 12/12 thing doesn't apply there. Thanks for the reminder.

Many plants show preflowers, with either pistils or balls, during vegging though, indoors and out. My plants show their sex under 18/6 light more often than not. So first pistil appearance is not a good way to determine the start of flowering.
