Howdy all- I'm two weeks into flowering on two gorgeous White Widow sisters. Bud sites (especially on top) are develping nicely. The lower ones, however are a little under developed due to the shade produced by the large single fan leaves (?). What's the thoughts of trimming away some of these? I thought they were there to soak up the light to make energy, but they look like they are inhibiting the lower growth. I could use some advice on trimming and just exactly how to do it. Thanks.

Pruning's been discussed/debated for years around here. Try the, Search this Forum option....Keyword: Pruning. Should bring up quite a few threads about pruning lower growth, fan leaves, etc... Personally, I'll trim lower budsites that don't receive adequate light, but rarely remove healthy fan leaves.

My thoughts exact, leave them big ol' fan leaves, they're just doing their job

Atleast until they start to die then you can remove them if you want. Some won't die.

Most of mine fall off, maybe two or three stay on, until they fall off I don't cut them as it makes the plant think sh'e injured and she'd heal herself instead of finishing off my yummy buds...

Do Not Trim Off Your Fan Leaves
permalink

I repeat.
Do not trim off your fan leaves.
You were exactly right. Those leaves are solar panels that produce energy for your plant to grow. They don't block light, they collect it's life giving energy.
The plant needs those leaves.
But you can tuck them out of the way if you want light to get to the lower growth.

I just want to say one more thing...If the chlorofill has left the leaf it is not collecting any energy. Therefore if its dead its blocking light. Removing dead leaves can only help. Why wait for another week for it to fall off?
