Can a lack of light actually kill a plant?
permalink

My plant has grown more than I expected in the past three weeks. It's about 5" tall and like 7" wide. But I still only have a 26 watt 1,750 lumen compact fluorescent. I keep the plant as close to the light as possible, about a half inch. I haven't experienced any stretching. But now that my plant is starting to get kinda big, the bottom leaves are almost in the shade. One of its first true leaves turned a bright yellow then died... overnight. And the tips of the ridges on the leaves curled up and are black. Basically all of the top, new growth looks perfectly healthy but the rest of the plant seems to be dying.

I'm getting a 150 watt HPS at christmas (also the time I'll start flowering) so what I have now has to hold on until then. I can't see any other reason why my plant would be doing this... I recently fed it with fish emulsion, thinking that what was happening was a lack of nitrogen. It hasn't really made a difference.

If anything, the best I could do is an 18" fluorescent. Do you think my plant is in need of extra light? And would an 18" fluorescent tube along with my 26 watt CF be at least enough light to hold off until christmas?

the first 2 seed leaves or cotyledons, always curl up and die....if is usually the sign that it is ok to use a 1/4 strength nute regimen...i don't think your plant will die...it will just strech out like a champ.

You didn't say how long the plant has had it's head out of the soil. But I am assuming (yes, I know about ass u ming) that your are only three or four weeks into your grow. Are your cotyledons dried up or yellow? Are you growing a strain that is very intolerant of nutes or pH changes? I would think that your plant is getting a fair amount of lumens keeping your light about 6" above the soil level. You said your baby was 5" tall. Are you using a reflector so all your light can be directed right down on it? That should be plenty of light until Christmas. You are hitting your plant right now with about 2200 lumens/sqft, if you are using a reflector, probably a little more. So that shows your intensity level is fine for now.

Ok...

Now, it seems that your plant is getting big, and it might be that your root system might be packed and perhaps root bound. So, to keep its self alive, the plant is reducing its self to support its life in whatever space you have provided for it. I would chop 1" off each edge of your root ball, and from the bottom, and repot in the same pot and see what happens, or you can repot in something bigger. Try it.

Good luck!

Arg, why does everyone always have to have all the details.

Nothern Lights, about three weeks old, cotyledons died and fell off, and no I'm not using a reflector.

An unfortuanate event happened and the plant was slaughtered. So out of curiousity, I took the plant out of the soil. The root was HUGE!!! It was definitely root bound. I'll be sure to use larger pots next time.
