Seed dealer Sagarmatka has the following statement--or variation--describing each of their indoor variety seeds.

Specifications: ~ Type: Mostly Indica, indoor and outdoor ~ Start Veg: shortly after roots show ~ Flower: 60 days ~ Average Height: 1 meter ~ Yield: 350-375 gr./m2 (dried) ~

What does "Start Veg: shortly after roots show" mean?

Does it relate to lights? If so, what is the state of the lights before veg? What after?

How does one see the roots? Peaking through rockwool? Digging into dirt?!

This usally means begin 24/0 light,or,at least,18/6.

Every plant has a vegetative cycle, where it grows as fast as it can, this begins from germination.

Read the grow guides Scrub, not being rude, but it's all there for you....just awaitin your perusal
Good luck.

Im going to guess they are assuming a hydro grow. When you see the roots coming out of rockwool cubes is what I believe they are referring too.
Though with seeds? I guess Ive heard rockwool is used mostly for cloning

Thanks. I've read the guides. Here is how I interpret this instruction:

Given:
A. Germination is in the dark.
B. Vegetative growth is with lights on 18 hrs or more a day.

Then:

"Start Veg: shortly after roots show" probably means . . .

1. Germination continues--in the dark--until you see a root come out of the seed.
2. Once a root shows, plant the seed and turn the lights on to 18 hrs plus.

"Start Veg: 1.5 weeks after roots show" probably means . . .

1. Germination continues until you see a root come out of the seed and extends another 1.5 weeks--in the dark.
2. Then plant the seed and turn the lights on to 18 hrs plus.

Is this a trivial question?

Your interpretation sounds O.K to me
I guess they are general instructions,if it were the users first grow,it may be useful for the seed co.to recommend a see-thru germ. container for experience.
good luck scrub

I'm going to agree with smokinrav on this one. Those instructions are related to hydroponic growing. The reason they are there is because as a seed germinates naturally in the soil, it will spend the first couple of days sending its tap root downwards before sending its catyeldons upwards for light. It will probably produce 3-4 inches of tap root before it starts heading up. If you were to immediately introduce light onto the seed when it first hatches in a hydro setup, it may dry out the root and kill the plant prematurely.

Growing in soil however, this should not be a problem. The light is unable to penetrate through the surface. Therefore, it will not contact the frail seedling until the catyeldons poke through the soil days later. I personally kept my lights on from the moment I planted my seeds in soil in order to keep my grow room temperature at 85 degrees. The light did not contact the seedling until it poked through the surface and as a result, I had a 95% germination rate in 4 days. The other advantage to leaving your lights on in a soil grow is that the catyeldons will open up immediately when they poke trough the surface. If they are left off, the sprout will think that it still has more soil to grow through, and it will continue upwards in a weak spindly manner until you eventually turn the lights on.

Peace,

smokinrav, this is the second time you've said i was being rude... i dont think its rude its just my way of expressing my opinions. i wasnt singling anyone out, i was just saying that the easiest way to grow is to plant the seeds, turn on the lights when they sprout. Lets try to keep this thread on topic and not turn into forum edicate.
peace

No it isn't your way of expressing yourself, as we are not talking about your vanacular. I have read through a whole bunch of your posts from this month, and hardly any of them have this kind of b*tchiness to them.
Some of the threads you offer advice that may actually help people. However ones like these don't help anyone... if you have nothing to add that will help the people, or encourage them, then don't write sh*t. I am not going to tell you again.

Sorry, bro, but like I said in another thread you were getting lippy in, don't do it or you will be banned. OK?
