Last month I made a post where I stated, based on personal observations and posts from others, that several nights of below freezing temps will kill a pot plant. But I found out different when I saw a pic of a plant growing with snow on the ground, and again just recently when my last plant survived perfectly well through several nights of freezing temps. Some strains can handle freezing temps (and some can't). Now I found out something else that proved me wrong on another aspect of growing. I've always told growers that NO light should reach a plant during the dark cycle. I stated that the grower needs ABSOLUTE darkness during the dark cycle. This was based on, again, personal observations and other growers' posts. I had a friend whose indoor grow was prevented from going into flowering after a month of 12/12, due to that little red light on her power strip. And another friend who had the same problem, which I traced to a porch light. So I recommended NO light leaks indoors and no porch/street lights outside. But I was wrong. Recently I visited a friend while he was harvesting a plant. There was a (sodium) street light that was bright enough to read the date on a quarter shining on his garden. They budded out just fine. I would still recommend absolute darkness, but some strains can handle low levels of light during night-time.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I love that. I proved earlier this year that even if a seed floats, it can grow. And grow big, one of my floaters is my biggest plant....It's my understanding that light leaks will make a plant stretch, not that it will stop it from flowering. I had light leaks galore over the summer and my plants did come out kinda stretchy, but now that the sun goes down ealier, they don't seem effected and I do have a littlle red light on too.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | years ago, i had a grow room that had a bathroom connected to it, and in order to use it i had to walk through the growroom, sometimes when the lights were off, which ment i had to open the main door to the growroom and let the hall light in, after growing at that same location for over 5 years, i never had a problem with it. IMO, i think it has something to do with total amount of extra light during the dark period. If the plant recieves more light during its dark period, it takes longer to mature. Over the period of eight weeks (the average time it takes for normal strains to mature in flowering) a few events of light during the dark times, isnt going to change anything. (me walking through the growroom to the bathroom for example, only subjected the plants to a bright light source for a total of a few minutes, if that) Outdoors, its even more interesting because there are many sources of indirect lighting at nighttime, such as the moon, streetlamps, porchlights, that might affect a plant. In my experience, these things havent had much effect on the plant, and they flowered fine. I do have indoor grower friends that swear by the "absolute darkness" rule however. The outdoor grower friends dont have the same rule ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | One thing I've noticed is that people (many people) will do something once or twice and swear by it. Anybody involved in science will tell you that any scientific way to find out something to declare it so there must be many tests along with partical conditions and repeated many times. Thats why the answers are so varied for cultivation. Sometimes people are lucky once and then swear by it. Thats why I like to hear from many sides of the fence and ultimately its my decison. I take the good and the bad in stride. I love scientific tests and mythbusters. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() | What I got the most of from my 2 most recent "discoveries" was not so much in busting a myth, but from the amazing adaptability of marijuana to grow & thrive. And also that it's not wise to insist on "absolutes".
