![]() | I'm currently expecting my first ever grow! Very exciting. I've got lots of flowers that have started over the last 3.5 weeks of 12/12. So far the biggest of them are as wide as my thumb (smallish hands for a guy - good for guitar playing though) and about extend in bunches along each stem for maybe 8-10cm. The plant is 75% sativa. I've done a lot of LST to keep them low during the first 2 weeks of 12/12 when they wanted to grow upwards several inches a day and the growth elongation seems to have slowed now (is that normal?). My main question is, it's very hard to tell how big the colas get from many of the great pictures on this site, and other sources. A friend said I should take some early samples now, but I think it's too early. How big and wide do they get before people look to harvest? I know you can't say exactly but ranges will do fine, give me something to chew on. 10cm? 20cm? +? Thanks for help in advance guys.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Size of cola/bud is not really a good indication of maturity ........Depending on the Sativa strain.....some dont actually develope a COLA in the same way an Indica would......depends on how much it stretches during the first few weeks of flower and the overall internode spacing...... to get a better indication, look at the colour of the Trich's (resin glands)....this also will depend tho, on how you like the buzz from your smoke .... ![]() clear trichs means they are not quite ready.... milky trichs means they are maturing amber trichs means mature... most people seem to aim for a mix of milky and amber, if you wait until they are all amber, you may miss peak THC content.... after this it will begin degrading........its a case of checking them daily with a small jewellers loupe or microscope untill you feel they are ready.... ![]() Have a look HERE for a thread on cola's and bud sizes..... ![]() LB

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hey Johnny As lilbud eluded too, there is no standard answer to your question. Indica tends to grow colas as its main supplier of flowers, where Sativas tend to have more side shoots, and/or contibuting bud sites. Environment (i.e. lighting, temps, R/H, nutes, etc.), strain, stress, genotype, phenotype....all play a role. Changing these will change the final outcome. I have an Indica Mother Plant that has produced up to 22" colas in soil based organics. I also have a Sativa dom pheno that only produces braids rather than full colas. It's all pretty relative. Generally speaking, I would think that one could expect at least an 8" to 10" cola from a typical Indica grown under proper conditions. Whether it grows larger or smaller is based on too many variables to predict. Certainly there's a potential for a much larger cola. From a gentics stand point, your question is like asking how tall a random human will be after adulthood, without as much as even meeting the parents........who knows ![]()

![]() | Yeah, thanks guys, I've got my jewellers magnifying glass ready! Lilbud - just a side point as your comment about predicting a humans height triggered a memory of a fact, namely that if you measure a child when they are 2.5 years old, they will be pretty much exactly twice that tall at full maturity! It doesn't seem like they can be that tall, eh?! Still, I thought that was interesting. Anyway. I guess I'll just keep on eyeballing them and wait and see.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi Johnny Vet!.. As the guys say, sativas often don't end up like donkey knobs.. They will show their charcter in a LST or SCROg too though.. The buds tend to be more airy, running & fluffy. That may sound bad, but its not.. The weight isnt as good as indicas, but they can either look like this, or be running, long foxtail looking braches.. This is a Kalimist from my summer grow, indoors. The highs are much more varied & mind altering than many indicas too. Not many are sleep inducing, let's say.. ![]()
