PH Adjustment?
permalink

My plants are only 8 days old from seed, but are already in their own pots sitting in the ebb & flow table. Since they are so young, I am NOT adding nutes yet. The PH of the plain water they're getting is 7.4. Do I need to adjust it downward? What should I shoot for?

The range you want is somewhere between 5.5 - 6.5, I keep mine right around 6.

Thanks teh_ren - but that's not the question. Maybe I better be more specific... without nutes in the water do I need to adjust the PH? Once there ARE nutes I plan on letting my PH float between 5.0 & 6.0.

You know what? I never thought about that. I would keep it PH'd to be safe, but I'm not entirely sure why....

hmmm

If anything, for continuity's sake. Just to keep it stable....

PPM outta the tap is 440. TG it is not even the well water around here - that's REALLY hard.

Can't you use PH down solution to get the ph down? I put my water and nuts in, leave them alone for 24 hours and then test it and use PH up or PH down to get it where I want it.

Guess what - my PPM out of the tap varies. A week ago it was 300, then 440. Two days ago it was 400 & today it is 500. Figures knowing the company who supplies the water! PH out of the tap is also varying.

Long story short, the plants now have water that has a PH of 5.3 and has 500 PPM. (Yes, the chlorine was blown off for several days.)

Varying tap water eh? That could turn out to be a serious pita. I take it that you're not on city water?

I dont remember pHing the water for seedlings, although its been ages since i started from seed.

What medium are you using? Rockwool? If its rockwool yes definetly adjust it to 5.5 because rockwool already has a high pH.

The ph of water generally doesnt effect soilless/coco/other mediums much though, as long as its a neutral pH you should be okay... The plants getting all its nutrients from its seedpod at this point, so I dont see a problem

In any case I almost never pH water when I spray or water clones, only when I foliar feed them. My water is pretty clean tho at 30 ppm & 7.0 ph.
