I dry small amounts of weed in paper bags all by themselves. The paper wicks moisture away from the buds pretty well as long as your not in a high humidity environment.

If the humidity is over 70% then a dehumidifier works wonderfully, and I would expect a desiccant would do the same, as long as its not spent... I would be afraid most desiccant packets are already absorbed most of the moisture they can hold unless you specifically purchase them fresh in hermetically sealed packaging. Or in the case of silica - you could open the packets up and bake the crystals for awhile to "recharge" them

If your humidity isnt high though, theres no need. Just hang the buds up or throw em in paper bags by themselves and they will dry just fine.

Isn't that stuff a bit caustic? Would it be bad if one of those packs broke open?

I think thats more of a problem with anhydrous calcium chloride, rather than silica. Silica is fairly inert... Almost a sort of plastic. Porous plastic... the anhydrous calcium chloride actually liquefies when it absorbs enough moisture. Turns into a thick liquid you definitely wouldn't want on your buds.

Yea it will work but I wouldn't say it would be necessary under ideal circumstances. Silica Gel isn't something I'd want around my buds.

Agreed^^^ if i am not mistaken that Silica Gel or Bead that is used to preserve and dry products is poisonous. To what extent i dont know but the package itself has a poison warning on it. I would be more concerned about the buds absorbing any toxic or harmful properties from the silica Gel.
