Leaves or Buds
permalink

I am a full 8 weeks into flower(9 weeks friday) and getting very close to being done. I have a hand held microscope from radio shack which works really well looking at the tricomes. My question, when looking for amber tricomes, should I look at them on the leaves or the buds to gauge when they are done. I have mostly amber tricomes(atleast 70 to 80 percent) on the leaves from top to bottom but looking at the buds, I still see clear and cloudy tricomes, some amber tricomes, but not like the leaves. I have alot of hairs turning orange or golden color all over. Just like to know where you guys are looking at for mostly amber tricomes. Thanks.

I prefer looking at different levels. Some buds are much more mature than others. I often even pick them at different times. Letting the other ones mature a bit. So I guess you could say I look at every bud before I cut it off. I just like my couch lock feeling.

Thanks guys. Since most of the tricomes are amber and the buds are looking done, I was going to harvest them this weekend. That will put them at 9 weeks of flower, though I might let them go another week so I can flush them out more.

I've always looked for the ambers on the bud...
Those handy dandy micros from Radio Shack have that LED light! If you go buy a super high powered AAA battery like an energizer Lithium, that LED will burn SOOO bright its amazing.
Put that AAA baby in there, and go high-beam amber hunting. I honestly look for Milky with a slight chance of Amber lol

good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not check every bud, thats for sure, but I do check some leaves, but mostly look at the buds, cause thats what I smoke. Many times I will remove my upper/exposed buds when ready, and let the lowers hang around for a few more days/week till they finish the way I like em.

I am kinda surprised that others just check the leaves....as IMO the trichs on the leaves seem to change stages more rapidly and are more advanced then the buds

I also have no problem with my scope actually taking it out to the garden and checking right on the plant without removing any material. As Gardenthis suggests the LED light makes status checking real easy.

Interesting do you mind posting a link??

I check the sugar leaves cause its hard to fit a bud underneath a scope I've never been wrong on my harvesting yet

Hey Burndt....can't give you a link because this is based upon my own observations over the years....bear in mind I am an outdoor grower only, (indoors maybe start next year if all goes to plan).

Also, not always is there a difference between sugar leaves and buds.....but I have seen them...

I have no problem with my 60-100x scope looking at the buds directly, in the field...

All I can say is that I have seen clear to cloudy on sugar leaves and the buds show me slightly different status, sometimes more cloudy/amber, and sometimes the other way.

So for me, decision to harvest is strictly based upon a final check of the buds themselves.

I can't explain it any better than that and really can't offer any reasons why the 2 views are SOMETIMES different....could be the plants orientation to the sun, wind, shade, plant development, strain etc....
K.

Good morning,

I hate it when looking at the plant for amber that usually the only times I see it is on an outter most bud on a branch where the remainder branch is still cloudy/milky.
Now I always thought it sucked to have to hack up my beautiful plants taking one little bud at a time rather then the entire plant.
I find I either cut down too early or i've waited too long - I love growing but, I hate it when I have to decided when to harvest.

have a Great day
