Dry Ice Drying
permalink

Anyone have any success w/ this? (I searched the site for "dry ice" and didn't get any hits.)

Quote:

Marijuana Cultivation/Curing - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
Dry Ice Drying Because light, heat, and air all degrade potency someone came up with the idea of using a can or other container in a freezer or using a cooler to dry the marijuana using dry ice. Dry ice can purchased at most any supermarket and is simply frozen carbon dioxide gas. You won't want to touch the ice directly but by using about the same amount of ice as marijuana you can dry your weed out without exposing it to air or light and certainly not heat! Simply lay down a layer of dry ice, put an insulating layer of breathable cloth over it like a cheesecloth or a simply kitchen towel. Then lay the buds spread out on top of the ice. Make sure there is a way for the gas to escape as the dry ice evaporates.

Dry ice never becomes liquid, it sublimates directly into a gas form and carries moisture away from your bud when it does. Once all the ice is evaporated your bud should be dry. If not, put a little more ice in and repeat until it is dry.

I've never tried it but I read about it in the Cervantes grow guide. He says that for a quick dry method, it works great to preserve the taste, aroma & potency. I was thinking about trying it my last grow with a bit o bud, but never got around to it. Give it a shot!

I'll give the dry ice method a spin w/ 2 colas from 2 plants that I partially harvested 3 days ago. By waiting a day or two more on the dry ice (Mon/Tues), the buds that have been drying for 3 das should finish drying stage 1 at about the same time, (ie a week from now) as the dry ice buds and it'll be possible to make a direct comparison. I'll take pics and post the results either here or in another thread.

wonder if you could keep it in the grow with a dark cover and let the next plants use the co2?

Also I'm assuming just enough ice so you can lay out the buds? or a pound of dry ice or what? Let us know this is the first time I've heard of it in person, so to speak.

Could you do me a favor and post the pics here? so i don't forget? i got some goodies this weekend i forget stuff lately........

Like, there was this time whe

I'll post before, during and after pics here. I'll also measure and weigh the buds.
I'm going to try to dig up more info, but as it stands the volume (ie size) of the dry ice should approximate the volume of bud. I thought about double dipping w/ the frozen co2 as well. It's only going to give the plants a one shot dose of co2, but why not?

That may very well be. From what I've garnered thus far, the dry ice method is only part of the drying process. When the buds are removed from the dry ice they are slow dried in the traditional manner for an additional 3 days. Dry ice drying is reportedly uniform so *my best guess* is that as long as moisture is present when they're pulled from the di, the buds will finish up normally. If too much moisture is pulled out during the dry ice phase, the buds are more likely to end up "crumbly...powdery".

I'm planning out a dry ice experiment as we speak. I'll bracket the di drying times w/ 4 or 5 equally sized buds, use different amts of di, and see if I can find a "sweet spot" for the process. Then again, I may end up w/ a freeze dried pile of dust.

Looks like either tomorrow or Weds for step 1.
