Drying for a month
permalink

My baby will be ready for harvest right before I go away for a month. I'm going to harvest the day before I go. Can anyone recommend how I should prepare the buds to store for the time I'm away? Should I hang them up in a dark cupboard or maybe in an air tight container?

This is my first grow so I'm pretty excited

Now I'm a relative newb, but I can say this - to dry them you do not want an airtight container. The buds will mold (very quickly) and game over.

You want them in the dark, with moderate humidity, with air movement, but nothing blowing on the plants themselves. They will be dry in seven to ten days typically, at which point you would normally take them down, clean them and jar the buds to cure for awhile (if you can wait ).

However, I don't know what to tell you if you are going to be gone for a month. I think they may get too dry hanging that long. The veterans here may be able to offer suggestions.

Congrats on your first grow.

I can't imagine letting them dry for a month - crispy bud!

But on the other hand, if you don't dry them first, they'll mold - no bud!

If I HAD to leave them for a month, I'd leave every single leaf on the plant & try to hang it whole - roots and all - in a very dark place with minimal air movement. And cool too, of course.

You might have to remoisten the bud when you put it in jars. I've never had to remoisten bud, but I've read that putting a lettuce leaf in the jar will help.

The idea is to draw the dry out but not long enough that mold forms on the buds.

Go with what BC suggested. The key is going to be darkness , air flow and temperature
The darkness will prevent the bud from drying too quickly
The air flow will prevent mold from settling in on your plants
The Temp will aid both of the above

. You do not want it to get too humid in there or your bud is going to ruin.

This is a worst case scenario when harvesting. You need to be there to monitor the drying and curing process or all your effort will go up in a cloud of mold.

Thanks for the replies, very much appreciated!!

Would it be worth drying them via a quick dry method and then sealing them in an air tight container for the month away? I'm willing to accept dry buds, can't be any worse than the shit I'm smoking now lol.

I'm no cannabis connoisseur so I'm just hoping to get the best possible results under the circumstances. In an ideal world I would hold off on my trip... but it's to Amsterdam, so my personal grow will unfortunately have to suffer

I've basically got 12 days til we leave. I had it planned so they would be ready for harvest early September but I had some unexpected problems with the temp in my grow box which delayed starting. They are definitely not ready yet. The pistils are still white and the trichs are all clear.

I would just let them go. Quik drying ruins it imo, and there is still always a chance for moisture in them. And it will easily mold.

Put them into a jar when you get back, slip a apple/orange peel in with it a while and it should be good.

A bit crispy, but should taste much better than a fast dry.

Sorry, DON'T do this....if you put your dry (semi-dry) buds into jars and leave them for a month without burping or monitoring you will come home to a jar of moldy buds.

Someone else posted that the drying/curing stage is the most important part....I agree.

Careful how you handle this...or you will have wasted all your effort growing...

Hopefully you can find a buddy to handle this properly

If you have someone you could trust to finish, that's my advice. You've come this far; why not complete the process properly?

If not, bluecheese gave the best method to follow, IMO. Just my ...
