Its preference there is no right or wrong time to trim.

Personally its a lot easier when the bud is fresh to trim it.

and yes ...I would pick off all of the fan leaves before i
chopped it down and trimmed the buds themselves.

Set up some newspaper or plastic on the ground. So the trim
has a clean place to collect.

Its a real pain in the ass to dry it and then trim IMO.

No! Don't cut off any leaves while the plant is growing. Cutting off leaves comes after the plant is harvested.

This is my first grow, and my buddys aswell. He insists you "have to" cut off leaves that are blocking light from reaching the lower branches. I though it was better to tuck the leaves, and only remove dead/yellowing leaves. What will cutting off these fan leaves do? Will it impact your yeild severly?

I do remove some inner fan leaves once 3 weeks into flower.... but only those blocking bud sites... 10-15% is a good guide...

I did a side by side experiment with 2 clones from the same plant. One I cut all the fan leaves off & one I kept all the leaves on, tucking where I could.

At first, the plant with no fans grew fatter buds, but in the last two weeks, the plant with leaves got fatter buds overall. The plants need those fan leaves for energy to build buds.

Tuck, don't pluck!

Gently tuck the fan leaves. The buds will get plenty of light and the leaves (the major solar energy factories of the plants) can go about their business. Your buddy is wrong. Perhaps you can occasionally trim isolated leaves for various reasons (air flow) etc, and leaves on the bottom 1/3 or 1/4 of the plants...but otherwise I wouldn't touch the leaves except to caress 'em and tuck em. Remember...tuck don't pluck.

Yeah sorry ape boy but you are wrong againBUSTED!
You don't cut off fan leaves because they are in the way
They are the power houses of photosynthesis
Cutting them off while flowering is counter-productive
You can even loosely tie them with those twist ties
Loosely enough that the don't sweat but back enough to infiltrate more light
Only remove dead ones
If we cut off some of YOUR body parts I bet you wouldn't function and produce well either
ALL things in nature likes to be appreciated and admired for what they truly are
