| I posted a nice detailed post on this subject in Recycling and was gonna link to it but I noticed it's been taken off. Perhaps whoever deleted it could repost it? I don't mind posting the instructions but I find typing it out twice rather monotonous. D9 | ||

| Cool, I found it still on my hard drive. I hope it doesn't get axed again. Handrubbing is one method most of us know from manicuring and I'm not going to get into it here... Water extraction is the most useful way for home-growers to make a little homemade hashish without vast fields for hand-rubbing or special screens for sieving. Water extraction is a simple, non-chemical way to extract much of the resin contained in the glands of small leaves and manicure trimmings. Large fan leaves have too little resin to be worth the effort. The water process changes the aroma and taste of hashish, diminishing the overall flavor, but produces a potent, compact product from leaves and trim that might not be worthwhile for smoking. Water extraction is also an important way of salvaging a crop succumbing to mold or rot during maturation or drying. Water extraction is simple: in water, dried leafy material floats and resin sinks. Resin is not water-soluble and the resin-gland heads remain mostly intact, sinking to the bottom of the container. The water and floating debris is decanted or poured off, and the resin is collected, dried and pressed to drive out any residual water. Fill a large jar no more than 20% full with dried leaves and manicure trimmings (lightly crushed or rough-screened], and then add ice water to almost fill the jar. Cover and shake vigorously for several minutes or more. Allow the contents to settle undisturbed for about 5 to 10 minutes. Scoop out all that floats with a small strainer or spoon, then slowly pour off almost all the water. To further clean the resin, repeat, but decant before the water clears; contaminants cloud the water. Wash the sediment through a coffee filter to collect the resin. Dry the filter and collect the powder(kif). You can smoke this as it is, or press it into hash. Repeat the procedure with the floating debris that you first scooped out to recover a second, less potent, sediment fraction. Sieving is preferred method for commercial manufacture. Sieving yields more hash per plant than rubbing. A sieving screen should have holes large enough that the largest gland heads could pass through, but not much larger, since more debris could also pass through. The marijuana must be thoroughly dried and the room should be cool and dry. Resin powder becomes sticky and impossible to sieve in a hot atmosphere. Sieving separates the resin-gland heads from plant debris. Dried flower tops are gently broken apart over one or more screens-The screen is then shaken or vibrated causing the gland heads to pass through the screen. Forcing the marijuana through the screen increases the amount of plant debris and contaminants that form the resin powder. You can first use a window screen to eliminate any large debris, followed by passing the powder through a screen made from a tightly stretched nylon stocking. Screens are available commercially, made from silk-screen, which is available at art supply stores and much cheaper. A little more complicated two-screen setup might have a screen with holes of 150 microns, coupled with a second screen below with holes of 50 microns. By vibrating crushed herb over the two screens, material larger than 150 microns (plant debris] stays atop the first screen. The resin powder that comes through is then vibrated aver the 50-micron screen. Anything smaller than 50 microns (mostly dirt, dust, immature glands and pulverized plant parts) passes through, leaving the fraction that remains atop the screen a relatively clean accumulation of large resin glands. A second pass through the two screens further purifies the powder. And there you go... D9 | ||
