| I'm a first tme grower. The buds have flowered and some of them are dropping pollen - should I harvest now?? I know the plant is a male, but there is one bud that has spiky white hairs, but lower down on the bud there are flowers dropping pollen. Is this an hermaphrodite?? Is it OK to smoke?? (I hope so!!!) Sorry for all the questions but I am a little confused, and desparate to sample my first home-grown. Boff | ||

![]() | No problem Boff, stay cool ![]() You really seam to have an hermie around, is it your only plant? If it's a male with a few female flowers, you should pick him when he's realeasing pollen, if the other way around, harvest between 50% and 80% depending on your personal choice... And yes, you can smoke him! I hope people can forgive me for saying such a thing but it was an honest answer, not my particular oppinion! ![]() As far as i'm concerned, you should cut that ***** of before he can polinate some nice inocent female around... Kill him and start again, it was a good learning experience! wolfman

| Better yet, capture some of that pollen and store in a cool dark, and reletively dry place. Storing in the fridge or freezer is not a bad idea if you protect from moisture and freezer burn. When you have a legitimate female plant that is flowering, you may want to produce a few seeds. A seed stock is always a nice thing to have if unforseen disaster strikes your garden. You can selective pollinate individual flowers on your female plant and produce good bud and good seed from the same plant. Keep in mind that pollen is very small and very light, and it only takes one microscopic grain to pollinate a female flower. The method I will use on my garden will be to dip the very tip of a moistened needle into the pollen outside of my actual garden. My garden fans will be off during this procedure, but the light will be on. I will selectively polinate flowers on a particular branch, one flower at a time. Finally, I will over bag the affected flowers with a zip-loc baggie to keep any stray pollen grains from pollinating other flowers. I will open this baggie to let in a little fresh air every day for several days, and then remove the baggie altogether. I would also suggest pollinating on a branch that receives less direct light because of the necessary bagging procedure. Boo | ||

| Hey Wolfman - You've got me all paranoid now I'm 110% male, least I was last time I checked I've cut off ALL the male buds now and left the 1 female bud to see what happens. I have only got 1 plant so there's no need to worry 'bout it pollenating any other plants. I grew the plant from a seed I found in a bag of weed - it was sort of an experiment I guess. I just can't wait for it to dry now ![]() | ||

Boo

I don't know exactly what to say, the idea of using an heavilly influenced hermie male as the source of pollen for your breadding stock should be completly out of the question, but for some reason i don't know about, you seam to consider that a good idea ![]() No inteligent bredder (or someone trying to do a similar thing) should use hermie genetics ANYTIME, seeds from hermie source will clearly be hermie influenced, and you (and everyone else around) will have to deal with hermie F1, F2, F3 or whatever... The process of making feminised seeds, is done with some particular females that when stressed will produce A FEW male flowers, NOT with any hermie, and certanly it is not the case, + even in those cases you CANNOT use the females as a bredding stock cause the F1 or F2 generation will have the hermie traits and that can be expressed any time! I hope this post to have some use, and i would really like NOT TO READ that thing again... wolfman[This message has been edited by wolfman (edited August 09, 2000).]

![]() | Boff... I'm glad you got the picture, that's probably not the easy decision, but in any case almost a totally correct one. The problem is not only with your other plants but also with every MJ plant around... i know of cases of polination AT LEST in 150m range, so... i'm glad if i was able to help you, just don't give up, your next grow will be much easyer ![]() wolfman[This message has been edited by wolfman (edited August 09, 2000).]

| I thought it wasn't a good idea to fool around with hermie seeds (seemed like common sense to me). Thanks for the advice Boo anyway. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the plant is indoors so there's no way it will pollenate anything. The female bud doesn't seem to be getting any bigger/thicker - is she in shock 'cause I pulled off all her little man friends??? The bases of a few hairs are going an orange/brown colour too. The male buds are drying nicely, I just don't know how long my patience will last ![]() Now that I know what is involved with growing your own, I think I'll wait till I've bought a new house (l8r this year hopefully) and then get some seeds mail order and have another go. Smoke on...... P.S. I used to be a wolf but I'm alright nooooooooooow. Yea I know it's crap. | ||

| My (only!) female bud is tiny, the hairs have started turning orange at the base, and the buds have little crytals all over them. I'll be lucky to get a joint out of it!! I smoked some of the male buds over the weekend - not as bad as I thought it would be, but I've had better smokes in my time ![]() Boff Sorry for the long delays, I only have internet access at work. | ||
