Is it best to harvest all at one time, or can you pick off what you need, when you need it, and leave the rest on the plant till later? Or does that reduce potency? Will the buds shrivel up and die if left on the plant for too long?

Try them out along the way, have a notebook and write down the age of the plant in each occasion and approx. how many of the pistils have turned reddish. Like

"21.8. Tried out some bud from plant 3, now 82 days old, about one third of the pistils have turned red"

Then you'll know how old the plant should be and what it should look like when you get the bud you like most. The younger the bud, the less cannabidiol and the more "up" high is a good rle of thumb.

When like 80-90% of the pistils have changed colour, you should at least then cut down the whole plant and put it in cool & dark to dry.

Hope this helps.. again, theres no better way to learn than to try out.

My freind says that harvesting only the buds that are ready and leaving the buds that are not yet at peak potency not only keeps you harvesting your buds at their peak, but also increases the potency of the smaller buds by the time they are ready....the stress from cutting off the ripe buds causes the plant to think an animal is eating it and increase thc production - just like topping does in the vegetative stage. Enjoy!
