Trichome color or pistil color determining harvest
permalink

Hi, first off congratulations on a great site.

I half heartedly planted some seeds in the yard after failing muliple times and was surprised to get 1 female plant. It is almost 6 feet tall and has numerous patches of white pistils. I have not seen any trichomes yet and the pistils are all still white. I have read that you should harvest when the magnified trichomes are cloudy or amber. I have also read that you should harvest when a good percentage of the pistils turn color. Aren't these mutually exclusive of each other?

Also, I would like to harvest earlier than average to get the bud with more of a head high, so I read that you should harvest when 10-20% of the pistils change color, but nothing was said about the trichomes that I could find.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Ultima,

Forget the pistils.

Go with the trichs.

Clear turning cloudy is what you want.

Floaty euphoria with periods of giggling.

Sounds like a plan.

hey Ultima - go by TRICHS for a better test....and follow buzzmobiles advice - go get a radio shack $10 mini scope. then snip a little of a leaf off near a bud and check it out

you will be amazed! the trichs become so obvious - and you can easily see whether they are clear, cloudy etc. i generally watch the pistols change as a good indication all is going well - but check the trichs for harvest (i admit still rather new at this!)

as for clear/cloudy/amber. i did a lot of searches and found most people harvest at the mostly cloudy stage. well i kept reading about the couch lock amber high and wanted to try that just to see my preference.

i have not yet made it that far! i usually try a test bud or two (well maybe three or four sometimes and have so far harvested at cloudy

so go with what most people say on this site - they are very knowledgeable and can really help others out!

happy growing and good luck (and i am waaay jealous of a 6 foot plant

I agree with both these guys. I took mine - following the method that spliffer describes - when there was just barely some of the trichs turning to amber, maybe one or two. The high that I am/was looking for is the same as what you are looking for, and for the most part I got what I wanted. I will say that the buzz will still be dependent on the strain. Even though I harvested mine at this time it still has a good bit of "couch lock" to the buzz. I will say that much more would have been undesirable for me. Good luck - 6 FOOTERS RULE.

P.S. Sorry for the past/present conflicts...I'm not the best writer

The trichs come after the pistils...that is they'll develope after the pistils have emerged. You're probably looking for somthing along these lines...just so you know, it's xjo 's pic if you have any question...

Good pic Eephus, of course coming from xjo what do you expect. I just wanted to add that the trichs on those are all clear.

I had a hard time imagining what the trichs would look like before I saw my own with the microscope. Try to get the microscope from Radio Shack if you can (I think this has been mentioned already). The sku number is 63-1133.
