I was afraid to make BHO as it can be dangerous. Well, if done right, it is not.

First I purchased the the X-tractor II form here. Then I got butane that had been refined for 5 times from here.

Hubby put the extractor together for me and the only hint I have is to set the extractors (I call them rockets) high enough so the butane going though the extractor does not bubble up & hit the screen at the bottom of the tube.

Next I ground up a jar of bud in my nut grinder.






Then I fill each rocket using a funnel and a poker.



It's time to move outside, with both rockets filled, 2 bottles of butane and a pyrex dish.



I select the correct nozzel between the butane & the rubber stopper, then press down on the can of butane until it stops dripping out the bottom. Notice the cylinder freezes.



I do one bottle of butane at a time. Once all the butane has poured through, I go back inside and start my trusty tea kettle to get boiling water.



Once my tea kettle has haeated up (it takes about 10 minutes) I pour boiling water into a pxrex dish that is slightly larger than the one containing the oil.



I bring the dish with the oil inside and place it in the dish with boiling water. The oil will bubble as the remaining butane is released.



I let it sit in the hot water for 20 minutes, then scrape the oil with razor blades. I usually smear one paper with oil & freeze the rest on the razor blades. Then it pops right off.

I found that one jar of ground up bud makes two rockets full. So, about an ounce per extraction.

Most excellent tutorial. How does the result compare with bubble hash?

So Mrs, Blue from what I understand the cold of the butane is what extracts the THC glads off the material, and as liquefies brings it out through the micron screen at the bottom.

Am I correct on that, cause I have no idea what I'm thinking, I'm ignorant about the whole oil extraction thing, but very much want to try it.

Awesome. Soon as I saw the title of the thread I thought maybe even I could do this too .

Blue:

1) how long does it take for the 10.8 ounce can to empty out?

2) one can per rocket, right?

3) how long do you let the dish sit outside before bringing it inside?

4) how stealthy is the process in terms of smell? (I'm thinking obviously that I have to do this outside at night, but still... ).

Also interesting and useful that an ounce of dried material, gound up, will fill two rockets.

I've finally got plans to do this now, but I've been one heck of a nervous nellie about it.

Strange that both I and Blue cheese should choose yesterday to make some BHO. I used about one can of Butane and it was done evaporating in about a half hour, your mileage may vary.

Very Nice extract I bet you could have gotten a more honey like color if you had not ground the cannabis. I very lightly break up mine, but I have seen people shove whole buds in those tubes.

I like it a little more then bubble hash, but I think it is more a matter of personal preference.

I don't know. Every time I have made BHO I have used more and more cannabis so I cant really give you an estimate of how much BHO comes out of a ground ounce or an un-ground ounce. I suspect that strain has a lot to do with how much BHO you can get out of a given amount of cannabis.

I do know that when I powdered up the herb for my first run the bho came out a greenish black and that when I did not powder up the product for my second bho production attempt it came out a creamy yellow color just not clear. Hopefully with my third attempt in a couple of months I will be able to make some BHO that is a nice golden clear amber.

Personally when I convert cannabis to extract it isn't really about the amount of extract it is about the quality of extract.
