Not a stupid question at all...with waterfarm buckets those are the net pots so to speak...they have holes in the bottoms for the roots to drop through. Most ppl drill a crap load more holes as I do too.

If you go to the thread in my signature DLA's 18 bucket blah blah blah you'll see them in use.
