Removing salt buildup from rockwool?
permalink

First off let me say this is my first hydro grow. Secondly, if this belongs in the nursery, i apologize ahead of time.

The problem im having is a salt buildup on the tops of the rockwool cubes im growing in. I flushed the plants several times, but the salts are still there (on the top of the rockwool). Is this simply a matter of pouring water on the tops of the rockwool to remove the excess salt? or am i missing something here.

thanks in advance!

When the salts become too dense you cannot remove them w/o scraping them off. Just finish the plants out, you'll be fine.

You may be getting mixed up with a salt biuld up "in" the media matey

Rockwool slabs can biuld up a problem inside the media, the local EC (not the runoff but measured in the slab) can go sky high as salts that form during low irrigation (with a high EC) can dissolve again when irrigation increases.

With severe salt biuldup you can get to the point where reverse osmosis takes place, the media drags water out of the plants from the roots.

I've only ever seen it in rockwool slabs, and it ended in tears

The salt biuld up on the top of rockwool cubes is usually nothing to worry about
